Hi Mandymum and welcome xx

Hi mandy mum, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear of your diagnosis, I;m sure you are still getting used to the idea. I would highly recommend getting hold of a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. The title is a little misleading because it is very useful to everyone with type 1, whatever their age (I'm 52!). Have a look in our Useful links thread for more good information and links:

What insulin regime are you on, and how were you diagnosed? Please ask anything that may be worrying you or confusing you - there is a lot to learn, but you have lots of friedly and experienced people here who will help you find your way 🙂

I think you are probably Type 2 if you were put on metformin as a person with Type 1 is normally put straight on to insulin. In that case, you will be more interested in Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker as this will be a lot more relevant than the book I mentioned in my earlier reply 🙂

Just metformin Mandy, are you sure you're type 1 rather than type 2?

No problems 🙂 The eye screening is pretty straightforward, so don't worry about it. Usually, they will ask you to read a normal eye chart then shine a light in your eye to see how large your pupils dilate on their own. If they don't dilate enought they will probably put a couple of drops in them, which might sting a little for a second, then leave them to work for a few minutes. Then they will take photos of each eye - nothing to worry about there. You should take sunglasses with you as things will appear very bright, and you won't be able to drive home if you have the drops. The drops take a few hours to wear off completely - you will be able to see OK, but not focus for reading etc.

Welcome to the forum mandymum 🙂
