:( Hi, I'm a sixteen year old and I've just been diagnosed with type one- anyone got any advice cuz it's gettin me down a fair bit :/

Hi Scouse, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis, I guess it hasn't quite sunk in yet. It's bound to be a shock to start with, but if you learn how to manage it then it needn't stop you from doing anything you want to and living a normal and full life. What insulin regime have they put you on? How did you get diagnosed, was it at your doctor's or in hospital?

I would recommend getting hold of a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults by Ragnar Hanas. It will explain everything you need to know about living with Type 1. Well, maybe not everything, but for those things it doesn't, you have us! 🙂 You may be able to get a copy from your local library.

Is there anything in particular that you are finding hard to deal with? Please feel free to ask any questions you may have - nothing is considered 'silly' and there will be people here who can relate and calm any concerns you may have.

Hiya!

I can remember being diagnosed myself (even though I am obviously very ancient now LOL) and it's horrible isn't it? And a huge responsibility to have to look after yourself 'medically' - do you know what?

It's perfectly alright to both cry and shout, also to scream and stamp your feet. In fact it's entirely normal. Just don't do it in school or in the supermarket!! Pretending a pillow is your diabetes and using it as a punchbag sometimes helps too. Just don't punch a person or small animal.

It doesn't actually change anything of course, but you might just feel better if you let it out.

Thing is, you have to learn to control it, instead of it controlling you. And the first way of starting the process is to say to it, whilst thumbing your nose, or other hand action - "I'll just show YOU who's boss round here!" - mean it and start doing it.

Hi scouse. Welcome🙂

Feeling depressed after diagnosis is normal. The only consolation is that you're young enough to be able to adapt to it. But that's not really much to cheer you with.🙄

As Northerner said, any question is valid. And that book is a must.🙂

It's a bummer, innit. My son got diagnosed during half term. He's 16 too. He keeps a close eye on the BG readings and makes sure he eats at regular intervals. His dad's also T1, and the GMNT has seen a fair bit over his lifetime, so has a reasonable idea of what to expect. From that point, I suppose he's lucky...

Read all the bumph they give you, take the diet advice to heart, and keep plugging away.

And come and rant, cry, bellow, or scream with laughter here any time it takes you that way.

Hi Scouse and welcome to the forum. Sorry you have to join our elite group but you are amoung friends. I echo all that has already been said, and it does get easier. Take care Hon. XXXXX

Welcome to the forum Scouse, you have done absolutely the right thing coming on here and asking questions. Everyone on here has experience themselves or looking after someone who has diabetes. As said before, no question is considered silly.

I have a question of my own. If a person is diagnosed for the first time at 16, would they have been T1 from birth or is it something that suddenly comes on (like it does with T2) and what sort of symptoms would have prompted diagnosis at 16

i am newly diagnosed type 2 3 weeks ago came as no real surprise to me as my family are nearly all type 1 or 2
i have been to 4 doctors 3 nurses and 2 dieticians in 3 weeks and have had lots of conflicting info, a friend who has 26yrs of type1 under his belt gave me the best advice.
test your blood lots and diary all your food, compare the results and you may find that one particular food makes you feel crap and be able to tweek your diet slightly, my nemisis was beans on toast ,changed to low sugar beans on brown toast problem solved,

good luck and keep the chin up.🙂
