Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Just saying hi to everyone! I'm new to the site and want to introduce myself. I'm 50 something; a mum and a grandma.I've got type 2 diabetes which is controlled by insulin.I've only been on insulin for 3 months so I'm not very sure what's right or wrong at the moment!!
I need some help and advice if anyone would be good enough to help.I'm going to Florida in August and want to know if I have to have a doctor's letter from my GP (which I have to pay for!), or if my copy of my prescriptions will do. Any help would be gratefully received.Thanks.

Hi dipsyM&G, welcome to the forum 🙂 You should ask your DSN (Diabetes Specialist Nurse) for a letter - as far as I know none of them will charge you. Better to have a letter, but also take your repeat prescription with you and remember that you need to carry your insulin in your hand luggage as it will freeze in the baggage hold!

What insulin are you on? Please feel free to ask any questions you may have and we'll do our best to help! 🙂

Hey, that names a mouthful............

there are a few type 2s here on insulin so be prepared to know it all very soon.............:D

A letter from you doctor stating that you are diabetic and need to carry insulin, needles and the like should come free of charge............

And the likelihood is you wont be asked to produce it 9/10 times.........but better safe than sorry.........

Welcome to the site..........

Hiya, Im new to this myself. Im type two diabetes also but mines controlled with other medication. I just read something on this subject and It was said that a diabetic medical card or identity bracelet maybe be needed at check points. Not sure if a copy of your prescription would be ok though. Hope this helps some

Welcome to the forum dipsymumandgrandma 🙂

Thanks for answering.I'm on Humulin KwikPen.As Im said I'm new to all this so you'll have to bear with me!!! Thanks for the advice. I didn't know I had to have everything in my hand luggage.

I didn't know what to call myself, so thought I'd put myself in the name!!I've not asked the doctor for a letter as he has a charge board at reception and it stated ?43 for medical letter for travelling and I then got very worried!! Thanks for answering I already feel welcomed.

?43 for a letter.............that's a con, honestly........you could book an appointment and get him/her to writer it there in front of you, easy as that....

I hope that isn't enforced for you..............

your name is good, we will all know who you are for sure...........🙂

I'll try that !! If that fails do you think my diabetic nurse is eligable to write one for me?

Most definitely..................if your on a better level with the nurse, he/she is just as capable..........

Thanks everyone for putting my mind at rest. It's good to know there are lovely people out there spending time to help.I'll drive you all mad asking about insulin, diabetes, etc.

Ha Ha..............give it your best shot.............

Welcome dipsymumandgrandma.

And to avoid having to ask for another letter in the future, ask the nurse to write a letter that doesn't specifically mention Florida and this summer.

Hi DispyM&G and a warm welcome to the forum

Welcome to the forum Dipsy :D

Hi Dipsy and welcome to the forum, from another T2 50 something easily confused mum and granny! You've found the best place to get all the help, advice and friendship you need. Ask away and we'll help as much as we can. Drive us mad?.....many have tried.....Lol XXXXX

hiya, thank god there are a lot of us around!!! Thanks for the many welcome's from everybody and also the good advice. Tomake matters worse having to balance my insulin etc I have also ms. That's probably why I'm so dipsy but then again I think my illnesses are nothing to do with that and I'm trying to kid myself. lol

Hi and welcome.

Your Dr's surgery may distinguish between fitness to travel letters and a letter saying you have to have certain meds with you.

The medical secretary at the practice I goes to produces a standard letter which says I need to have the following with me - and it then has a list of my meds and when they were last prescribed. Yours may do something similar.

Florida will be very hot in August and heat can affect how much insulin you need - you may also find that the change of time zones and journey affect your levels. Will you have any way to keep the insulin cool whilst you are there?

I would suggest that you speak to your DSN about the holiday and advice on the journey.

Hi thanks for your reply.I will be keeping my insulin in my hotel room where there is a small fridge.Any advice for the flight?(9 hours).
