Hi rendrag, welcome to the forum 🙂 Not very helpful from the nurse, by the sounds of it. Don't worry, there are hundreds of experienced, friendly people here who can help you get a good understanding of how best to manage your blood sugar levels. I'd suggest that a good place to start would be to get hold of a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which many of our members swear by. There are also a lot of usefl links here:

Read 'Jennifer's Advice' for an explanation of the best approach to self-testing. Normal, non-diabetic ranges are from 4-7 mmol/l on a meter, but don't worry if you are not achieving this for a while as it will take time for the medication to start working properly and for you to get a better understanding of your diabetes.

Finally, don't worry - this CAN be managed, and many people find it gives them the motivation to achieve a much healthier and happier life than before diagnosis. Ask anything that may be troubling you - nothing is 'silly' - and we'll try our best to help 🙂

Hi Rendrag and welcome to the forum. I ws diagnosed T2 in November so like you I'm fairly new to it all. Unlike you I have had to get my own meter as my GP won't give me one, not really started using it properly yet though. As Northerner says try and get a copy of Gretchen Beckers book it's well worth it. Finally use the forum, I could not have coped without all the support and advice I have received from these guys and girls they are great.

Good luck for the future xx

Welcome to the forum rendrag. Despite your recent diagnosis I hope that you have a great new year.

I was diagnosed in October, 2009 and can say with confidence that 2010 turned out to be a pretty good year for me healthwise. Just get yourself informed about your condition and start doing the things needed to give yourself the best results possible.

Being diagnosed type 2 need not be as bad as you think. As Northerner says, it may actually be a spur to a healthier, happier you! 🙂

Hi a warm welcome to the forum rendrag x

Thanks for the posts guys. Much appreciated. I'll get the book as soon as the shops open again. It already has made sit up and think about a lot of things. As I said I've already changed the diet because of the cholestrol which is now only slightly above normal as opposed to twice what it should've been.. Next step is the stop smoking bit which I must admit is filling my dread, been a heavy smoker of 32 year and have had asthma for ten so a total life change is in order. Thanks again and a happy new year to you all /|\

Just re-read my first post sorry about the spelling it was late lol, Note to self, remember to proof read before posting lol

Put this book on your shopping list too, in that case: Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking. I smoked for 20 years, read this book over a weekend and haven't smoked since - it really does work and I know many other people who have stopped smoking after reading it. Far better than nicotene gum or patches that just keep you addicted.

Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do now you have been diagnosed with diabetes. Not only does it remove a huge additional risk factor for heart disease, but it will actually help to improve your blood sugar levels. Good luck! 🙂

Welcome to the group rendrag. I was diagnosed 10 years ago now, but joining the forum only 4 months ago was the best thing I did as I have a much greater understanding of my condition now and I feel I'm among friends.🙂
