Hi Nicola, sorry to hear of your diagnosis, but try not to panic! You've made a great first step by joining the forum, so a warm welcome to you. There are many friendly and experienced people who will help you with any questions you may have, so please ask anything that may be concerning you - nothing is considered 'silly'! 🙂

I'd suggest getting hold of a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - highly recommended by forum members, and will put your mind at ease and explain what your diagnosis means and how to deal with it.

Have you been put on any medication?

No the doc said try diet and exercise till january then take it from there i feel in limbo he didnt give me any advice on food choices he just told me to come on this website for info im very confused i never stopped crying yesterday when my gp told me on the phone but ive got to get used to it sorry if i come across like im feeling sorry for myself

hi nicola
please dont worry about the crying ..i cried for days and was so confused ...it took me a year before i found this place and it has been a great help and support to meet others x have a good read and when you are ready ask away ...remember no question is regarded silly here x good luck x🙂

Welcome to the forum nicola.

You've come to a pretty good place for support and information. Have a read of the sticky at the top of the newbies section. You'll find lots of good advice there.

I'm intrigued, though. Did the GP tell you on the phone about us specifically? What did he suggest that we could do for you?

Andy 🙂

Goodness, that's not a great way to learn of your diagnosis - at least he directed you here! It's very early days, so try not to be overwhelmed. There are many people here who have been in exactly the same position as you, so we can empathise with how you are feeling. There is no huge rush to get everything right from Day 1, so take it one step at a time. Think about your diet and activity levels - are there any ways you think they might be improved? The best thing to do from the start is to try and eat less of foods that are clearly sugary, like cakes and biscuits, or processed like ready meals or pies and pastries. Have a look at the GL Diet for some good examples of a suitable diet to follow - here are some links to books I found very good:

The main thing to remember is that ALL carbohydrate food (pasta, potatoes, rice, bread) converts to glucose and will raise your blood sugar levels, so keep portions moderate to small and fill up on vegetables or alternatives instead.

It would also be a very good idea to ask your doctor fr a blood glucose meter so you can measure your own blood glucose levels. He may not want to as the test strips are expensive, but explain that you want to know how different foods affect you so you can modify your diet accordingly.

In time you will learn how best to manage your diabetes, and many people find they end up much healthier and happier than the were prior to diagnosis - it's true! 🙂

welcome , I hope your GP arranges to talk to you , explain everything and give you follow ups for a few weeks ,anything you not sure of, this website is a great source of information , 😱

one step at a time ....have everything in MODERATION ....i firstly removed all obvious sugar from my diet ...but still enjoyed the odd treat ..(such as DARK CHOCOLATE ..little bit at a time) ...build up your exercise slowly as well and add little bit extra each day ...it soon adds up x

Welcome to the forum Nicola 🙂
