Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi everyone

My name is Roger and have been a Type 1 diabetic for the last 25 years . Fortunately I have been well controlled and have led an active life with few problems.

For all my 25 years, I have been lucky to have received tremendous support and care from the diabetic teams in High Wycombe and then when we moved to York.

Recently my 23 year old daughter has also been diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and is coming to terms with the change in lifestyle - injecting/ blood testing etc

She has just qualified with a degree in complementary therapy and wants to set up her own business providing remedial massage etc . However she is concerned that she will not be able to carry out the physical aspects of providing full remedial body massage without having a low during the treatment

Does anyone have any experience of working as a complementary therapy/ remedial massage therapist and the way diabetes has affected them. Any comments will be welcome

Just a welcome roger.................

:D

Hey there welcome to the forum!! I hope you enjoy your time on here ... I'm afraid that i can't help with anything on that side of things ... I just wanted to welcome you!! XxXxX

Hi Roger, welcome to the forum 🙂 Sorry to hear of your daughter's diagnosis, but at least she is well placed to receive help and guidance from you - and us too of course, if she would like to join!

I don't have any personal experience of what you ask, but our members do a variety of jobs and hopefully some will be better placed to help you both.

Welcome to the forum Roger but I'm afraid I can't help you with your question either.

Welcome Roger 🙂

Could your daughter maybe do some practice sessions at home or with someone who can help in case she hypos, and test her BG as she goes ?

She may discover how many extra carbs she needs to cover her exertions.

Hi Rob

Thanks for your thoughts - both my wife and I are trying to get her to practice on us but we think she needs someone with experience of working in the remedial massage field to give her the confidence from working and coping with the situation she now finds herself in

All the best

Roger

Welcome to the forum Rogera , like Northern suggested why not get her to join the forum ? 🙂

Roger, unable to answer your query also, but perhaps your daughter could get in touch with one of the trade organisations dealing in Complementary Therapy and ask them for advice on this matter, without doubt they will have members who practise remedial massage and have type 1 diabetes also. Any exertion such as sport, hard physical work or gardening requires the person to either eat more carbs to compensate or reduce the amount of insulin to prevent hypoglycemia, so depending upon time spent on each massage and patients seen per day it will all come down to trial and error, testing regular, recording and looking over previous days activities will help her plan ahead more effectively.

Here's hoping your daughters business is successful and do keep us informed of her progress.
