At risk of diabetes
Back end of last year when i have my MOT and service at the docs my HbA1C test was 42 so the nurse said i was prediabetic .Christmas was just around corner and i admit ,i am a chocoholic etc so i tried to rein it in my sweet tooth i mean
From middle Jan my urine at night did smell and other symptons started but i do not seem thirsty .So i went cold turkey stopped chocolate i watch my sugary foods etc .
I am 64 in May i take cardiac meds ,i do walk a fair bit . i am sort of retired !!! my sleeping is eratic
i dont feel ill , just wondered if i continue watching my intake of goodies my HbA1C will come down
Cheers Junctionman

Yes, it should. Maybe look at your diet as well to avoid future complications. Are you game for that?

I'm afraid it is a bit more than just 'sugary' foods as all carbohydrates that convert to glucose so reducing your portions of potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, pastry and breakfast cereals as well as more obvious cakes, biscuits and sugary drinks including fruit juice and having more vegetables. If you are having chocolate then choose dark choc and keep it moderated, the Aldi Moser Roth ones are nice.
You probably on need some modest changes to your diet to keep things where they are but having a better understanding of the condition will help you make some better choices. The information in this link explains things very well and there are some suggestions for making some changes, as I said fairly modest. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/

Being at 42 at 64 isn't actually bad, and possibly not a problem.
I doubt you'd be getting symptoms of diabetes at that level.

I am not going to freak out too much about it (ok cold turkey re choccy may be a bit ott) but i do think i should take note of it . My HbA1C test was 42 could that be an erroneous figure or just a blip
i admit i do need to lose a bit of weight and eat a some more fruit and veg , as my grandad used to say `your bodies an engine it need good fuel to run right ` he was chopping some apple and pear up at the time trying to get me to eat it rather than a big chunk of chocolate cake !!!!
thank you for the replies i will be on again asking many ,many questions

It is not something to panic about and it is just something that is worth keeping an eye on so it does not creep up and catch you out. As mentioned 42 is unlikely to be a problem as the new guidelines are that the level at which a diagnosis of pre diabetes or diabetes should be more lenient when people are older anyway and people should have a more personalised plan taking into account other health risk factors.

It isn't the chocolate, it is the sugar added to it. Check the carbohydrate content of the various bars - there are some 100% cocoa ones, but that might come as a bit of a shock if not toned down with something less bitter.
Unfortunately apples and pears are quite carby and not much of an improvement for a type 2 diabetic.
As you are not high on the HbA1c scales I suppose you could just toss out potatoes, bread and other starchy foods and eat the chocolate.

Welcome to the forum @junctionman

The HbA1c result is one that moves slowly over weeks and months, so is less subject to ‘blips’. It is a measure of how much glucose has ‘stuck’ to your red blood cells over the previous 3-4 months. The more glucose you have in circulation, the more red blood cells will have been affected.

Being at risk of diabetes (sometimes called prediabetes) runs from 42-47mmol/mol, so you may find that some relatively modest changes to your menu will be enough to help your metabolism cope.

Cutting right back in the sweet and sugary things is a great start. It can also really help to reduce portion-sizes of starchy carbohydrates and have more leafy veg, broccoli, cauliflower, courgettes etc. And to go easy on fruit (a couple of apples can have as much carbohydrate in them as a small slice of cake - though are better for you in other ways).

Good luck, and hopefully you’ll see some positive impact on your reduced-chocolate results at your next check. 🙂

Thanks again for the replies.
i have written a list of food items which i can eat and are ok so i can produce some tasty dishes , the `other` foods i will eat in moderation i do like my `Sunday dinner` still .
i have and am going to cut down on my `sweet tooth` items , i was once described as a grazer !!! so its graze on the right stuff .
Will Power !!!

thanks again everyone🙂
