I am 49 yr old, I had gestational diabetes.
Last year October, I diagnosed with DM2 Hb1Ac was 52. On Metformin 1000mg once a day . Recently, I checked my fasting sugar which came up around 19.
I was so worried, just wondering is there any programme available to understand what to eat and how to balance my sugar.

Welcome to the forum. Many people choose a low carbohydrate approach to manage their blood glucose but others find low calorie or a shakes-based regime can give them a kick start. However a fasting glucose of 19 doesn't quite match an HbA1C of only 52 so I wonder if whatever dietary changes you made have not been sufficient. It would be usual to have a repeat HbA1C about 3 months after diagnosis to check if you have been going in the right direction. Of course it could have been a rogue reading so always worth repeating if it is not as expected.
If you are interested in trying the low carb approach this link may help you.
https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/ based on real food so may fit in with family life.
The main DUK site a variety of meal plans as well.
It is good you have a monitor as you could do some strategic testing of your meals. Testing before you eat and after 2 hours will tell you if your meal is tolerated if the increase is no more than 2-3mmol/l or as levels come down no more than 8.5mmol/l.
How did you manage your blood glucose levels when you had gestational diabetes and how long ago was that.

Thanks for coming back to me . I checked my HbA1c in End of March this year . At that time it came back to 44 from 52 . I after that I was a bit relaxed and did not check blood sugar for 2 months . By the time I realised it’s too high. Even though the GP requested HbA1c on the firm they haven’t done it ,. Unless the lab inly repeat the test after 3 months: I’m not sure.

During GDm I was on Metformin , which I was very carefully monitored .
I think I need to be disciplined now .

I would be surprised if your HbA1C had gone up so much since March so much that it would be giving you a fasting glucose of 19 unless something has gone seriously awry. I would check again for the next few days to see if it was just an aberrant reading making sure you wash your hands.

That’s what I thought.
It was not one or two reading , fasting glucose for 3 consecutive days was shown like 16, 14 , 19 .
Random one was 21, 23 26 .
That’s why I can’t figure out what gone wrong, I wss not disciplined as before but still doing exercises .

Hi Bab, welcome to the forum.

It's probably best to get your HbA1c tested again and have a look at what's going on with your GP as you'll get a better picture of where you are and what, if anything, needs to be done.

They can also advise on any local programmes that may be of use of dietician appointments that may be avaliable.

We've got lots of info around food on our main site and a really good food section so feel free to have a look around and let us know if anything in particular pops up for you.

If your levels are that high it would be a good idea if you had some urine test strips to check for ketones, they can be bought cheaply at the pharmacy.
I would also speak to your GP pretty urgently and get that HbA1C test done asap.
What is your diet like, it would be a good plan to cut your carb intake and make sure you drink plenty to try to flush some of that excess glucose from your system.
If you give some examples of typical meals people may spot some problem meals and foods.

Hi
Thanks for the info
I have the Hb1Ac result back today , which came back as 76.
I am trying to eat more salad and meat like chicken. This morning fasting came bk as 12 .
The only issue is after having some rice ( 2 hrs later) came bk as 19 .
Is it better to avoid carbohydrate fir all meals until everything is a bit more settled.
Thanks in advance

Clearly rice is not a good option and is one of the high carb foods which many do need to avoid. It is your choice of carbs which is important, is does not need to be avoiding all carbs, but finding lower carb alternatives. You could try cauliflower rice or butternut squash or have more of the lower carb veg like green beans, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower or salads.
Check out the link I posted for some menu ideas, you don't need to restrict yourself to just chicken, all meats are low carb and fish is good, eggs, cheese so plenty of options. You have to give yourself variety as this is for the long term and you have to enjoy your meals.

Hi There! @Bab I would suggest joining your local diabetic group to get insight on how fellow diabetics manage their condition here https://www.diabetes.org.uk/how_we_help/local_support_groups.
