Hi all thanks for letting me join.
I'm from Somerset and have been diabetic since my first pregnancy 15 years ago x
But I have some questions regarding that
Thanks

Heather

Hi Heather and welcome.

Would you like to tell us a bit about how you manage your diabetes? Things like.... What, if any, medication you use or if you are diet and perhaps exercise managed? Your most recent HbA1c if you know it?

Fire away with whatever questions you have, either here or start a new thread....

So I've been on medication for the 15 years especially metaformin but they have kept switching all over medication as nothing seems to work, I have a generally good diet and exercise daily but have just been informed my HaB1c has again increased from 62 in Jan to 75 now and all my levels are out. Basically I'm asking as others have mentioned it could I have LADA diabetes??
Sorry for the long one x

Often people feel they have a good diet but sometimes are underestimating the impact that carbohydrates have on their blood glucose and what many consider a good diet is not so if Type 2 diabetic.
What would be typical meals that you have if you would be happy to post as people may spot some problem foods.
What medications have you tried as it maybe that you do need help from insulin but diet might be one thing to look at.

I think we would need to know a bit more about your circumstances to give an indication if LADA is likely. Things like how you presented at diagnosis ie symptomatic or not or was it just picked up through routine screening.... I appreciate you were pregnant at the time so likely screening. Did you need insulin during pregnancy to manage it?
As @Leadinglights mentions the concept of a "good diet" can be misleading and NHS advice has not always been helpful to Type 2s over the years, so it may be that your dietary changes were not enough to manage your levels and it has slowly progressed. For instance you may have been eating porridge and fruit for breakfast thinking they were a good choice, when they may have been making things worse. Some of us find porridge is like rocket fuel for our BG levels and we have to be careful of our choice and portion size of fruit too. If you can give us an indication of what you typically eat, it might shed a bit more light on the likelihood of a possible LADA. Were you overweight at diagnosis or slim or just normal.... obviously taking into consideration your pregnancy at the time.
Have you lost weight easily or without trying in the interim period? This is probably an unlikely a symptom of Type 1 to exhibit with an HbA1c that is still not massively high at 75..... but it would depend how low carb you are eating to achieve that result of 75. If you are still eating normal bread and pasta and rice and potatoes and breakfast cereal and fruit, then probably not. If you have stripped your carb intake right down to the bare minimum of a few berries and low carb veg, but no bread, tatties, pasta etc, then possibly.
15 years would be quite a long time to be LADA and still managing without insulin, with just a moderately high HbA1c. If it was up above 100 and you were hardly eating any carbs at all, then I would be suggesting it was quite likely and you should push for C-pep and possible antibody testing.

Sorry to hear about your HbA1c nudging upwards.

Diabetes does just sometimes change over time, so the fact your medication needs are changing does not necessarily mean that your diabetes classification is wrong - though of course, we have quite a few forum folks who were indeed misclassified to begin with.

Must be very frustrating for you that different sorts of medication haven’t really worked well for you :(

Have you ever been offered insulin?

I only just scraped through my glucose tolerance test in my first pregnancy 25 years ago. Had on off blood sugar issues up until my diabetes diagnosis 2020. Antibody positive showed LADA. They say pregnancy can highlight a chink in your armour. Although GD can be a precursor to type 2 I suppose the same could be possible for LADA as it can take decades which was certainly the case for me. Always worth pushing for tests. Sometimes you can pay a one off consultant fee and they may push testing through nhs. I’ve done this before but I’m not certain if this would be the same elsewhere. It must have been tough on you. Good luck in finding a more tolerable way forward xx

I'm definitely going to push for test, even if it comes back negative at least I will know.
My eating habits lapse sometimes but generally they are good with minimal carbs apart from the dreaded porridge which depends on who you talk to is good or bad thing but as I work long shifts helps me through.
Sometimes I feel like just given up as I just don't know what to eat at all as everything puts my sugars high its not often I'm below 15 and at my age its causing damage else where. It's a vicious circle as when sugars are high I just want to sleep and cry but I push myself to exercise instead but I don't feel like the doctors believe me about what o eat and how active I am.
Sorry rant over x

You rant all you want… it’s an incredibly difficult condition to cope with when you have no way of controlling it. I was diagnosed during covid over the phone. Doctor said oh your repeat bloods show you have type 2. I said oh ok, she said you need to lose some weight and exercise and go on a fasting diet. I said but I run most days and I’m a size 10… I just know she didn’t believe me, then she said oh your what we call skinny fat !!! Your organs will most likely be fatty. When I finally did get a face to face she did organise the antibody testing and scans revealed absolutely no fatty organs!!

I’ve never heard of someone with LADA lasting 15 years without insulin so I’d think it’s unlikely
