Hi, I was actually diagnosed 3 years ago during our first lockdown. I have not had any professional dietary advice and have just been muddling away myself reading snippets here and there. I find that I am struggling, having lost a lot of weight initially and then put it back on and now loosing it again. It is just so HARD. I am also a total newby to forums so have no idea what I’m doing.

What kind of things are you eating?
Many people find that reducing their carbohydrate intake can have pretty dramatic effects on weight and blood sugar levels.

Oops edit to add Hello and welcome!

Hello, good morning & welcome.

Are you prescribed meds for your diabetes? Certain meds may affect how one would approach a dietary overhaul.

Hi, thanks, I’ve cut way back on carbs but haven’t cut them out totally. I have small amount with my main meal, either tatties/pasta/rice, but I’ve no idea how to count carbs. I just find it a complete minefield.

Hi, thanks, yes I’m on Metformine and presently twice a day as my sugars rocketed at the end of last year. Hoping to get that reduced this year if I can get to grips with it all.

either tatties/pasta/rice
I found all of those would send my blood sugars up so cut them out completely..
Do you like green veg? if so indulge in that with some butter over the top and have more meat/fish too.

Have a look at this link as the explanation are very good and there are some do's and don'ts as well as some menu ideas.
What approach you take is your choice but really it has to be enjoyable and sustainable as it needs to be a new way of eating.
Knowing what carbs are in various foods is important as it allows you to make sensible choices about what to have and what portion size. Looking on packets will become second nature or on the internet for the TOTAL carbohydrate of what ever food it is. You would then have to work it out for the portion you are going to have. So if something says 50g carbohydrate per 100g and you are going to have 50g then it would be 25g carbohydrate. Having some scales on your worktop will help you decide what your portion is.
The book or app Carbs and Cals is very useful as it gives pictorial images of various portions of a whole range of foods and meals.

Thank you, my brain is reluctantly coming to think this but my body is screaming No. Please tell me that the occasional tattie will not kill me I’m just about to plant my tatties, so may have to re-think

Thank you, I’ll have a look at both of these. I’m realising that I have a fair bit of research ahead of me.
When I was first diagnosed the nurse told me that I would get an appointment with a dietitian but unfortunately that has never happened

It won't "kill you" .. highly unlikely to help you to achieve remission though.
It depends what your aims are.

That could well turn out to be a major bonus for you!

Yes, I used to grow lots of potatoes but now just do a couple of varieties which we particularly like, pink fir apple and charlotte but only have them occasionally, you can't beat a home grown new potato with lashings of butter. I now grow lots of different squashes as they are much lower carb. In fact I still have a few pink fir apples left from last year in the shed.
I always feel you need to make your carbs worth it for enjoyment and flavour, I would not choose to have two starchy veg in one meal.

Perhaps if you replace the really carby side dishes? (pasta can be subsituated by courgettes sliced, ribboned or spiralised, and you can use cauliflower to replace rice, just grate it)
Potatoes aren't as carby as the above two and the bs spike can be reduced by making them into chips or doing a potato salad.
Bread is the one that is hard to replace, but they sell High Low bread in my sainsburys, on 15g carbs per hundred which is half normal bread and the loaves are quite small so there is less per slice on top of ghat. You can make your own bread from seeds rather than wheat. Its...ok.
Good luck in your low carb journey

I reversed my diabetes with a calorie restricted shake based diet.
Have a look for the "Newcastle diet".
It's worked for quite a lot of us on here.

Thank you all, your comments are very much appreciated and will help me to shape my personal diet 'journey' (hate that expression but hey ho). My plan is to do some research, list the foods that are good, bad and middling. From there I can work out some menu plans & hopefully as time passes and I get more used to things it'll all become second nature.
Many thanks R
