Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi, I am glad to be joining others who like me have type 2 diabetes, if anyone can help I need to lose weight, but being 66yrs old and with poor mobility it's proving difficult. Look forward to any suggestions.

Welcome @Liverpoollou 🙂 Are you on any medication for your diabetes? How long have you been diagnosed?

Yes, having reduced mobility can sometimes make things harder. Do you have any limits on what you can cook, eg are you ok to stand to cook, or do you need quick options?

Hi Inka, I was diagnosed 3yrs ago after I had a Gallstone Ileus surgery, I take metformin and have recently been started on trulicity. I'm OK to stand, I would prefer quick options as I'm only cooking for me as I'm on my own.

Something that many people find helpful is to cook enough for multiple meals and freeze in suitable portions then you have homemade 'ready meals'.
Having things like cooked meat, salad, coleslaw, eggs, cheese which can be used to make easy prep meals.
Have a look at this link which may give you some ideas for meals as well as some do's and don'ts. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/, it is a low carb approach which many have found successful in both losing weight and managing blood glucose level.
The NHS has some seated exercises designed for folk with reduced mobility which may be suitable for you.

I totally agree with @Leadinglights comment about batch-cooking and freezing. Also, you can keep healthy convenient things in your freezer to make cooking less of a chore eg there are bags of cauli rice you can microwave.

Meals don’t have to be boring if they’re quick and simple. Something like a salmon fillet with green veg and/or a nice salad is simple and low carb.

Welcome to the forum @Liverpoollou

I think it is much harder to maintain the motivation to cook more elaborate meals on your own, but a mix of fancier things (even if quick) and low-to-no-effort standby options can stop things getting too boring.

There are lots of ‘30 minute’ recipe books these days, if you need some inspiration for things which are a bit more interesting, but still quick to make.

And as others have said, if you cook double the quantity and fridge or freezer the leftovers you can have tasty options which only need reheating 🙂
