My 11 year old son was diagnosed with t1 in july this year, he also has a.d.h.d and aspergers syndrome (type of autism, high functioning) his blood levels are all over the place since he had the flu spray. Is this normal?? Thanx. Xx

Hi and welcome to the forum 🙂

It's certainly possible that the flu vaccination is messing with his levels. The nasal spray contains a live (weakened) form of the flu virus, so your son's immune system may be dealing with that! Not everyone reacts to it in the same way though - my son didn't have any noticeable effect on his BGs this year.

It's always possible of course that there could be another reason for the turbulent levels, e.g. he could be having a growth spurt or incubating some other illness. You just have to go with the numbers and adjust his insulin accordingly. Is he on MDI (basal-bolus)? Has your clinic team taught you how to make changes to his insulin doses?

Hi Daniel's Mum, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'm sorry to hear about your son;s diagnosis and his current problems following the flu vaccination. As Redkite says, this could be related to the flu spray and hopefully things will improve within a few days. At his age though there could be a number of other factors at play. Do you adjust his insulin for each meal? If so, I would seek advice from his DSN to see how you can increase his insulin to try and keep his levels under control.

On a more general note, please do ask if there is anything you are not sure of. We have lots of lovely parents here who will no doubt have experienced similar things and can offer you some reassurance when problem situations arise. I would recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young People by Ragnar Hanas - an extremely useful reference guide for all things you are likely to encounter.

I hope that things settle down for him very soon 🙂

Hi and welcome from me too 🙂

My daughters had a reaction to one of her flu injections before but we found things to be ok this time round, she had the spray too for the first time but no high BG's. So seems to be hit and miss with us regarding the flu vaccine each year. 🙂

Welcome from me.........

I think it can be normal to have wonky blood sugars after the flu jag/spray.....

that reminds me I need to get mine.......🙂
