Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
I was rushed into hospital 7 months ago after collapsing in the house where I was diagnosed with type 3c diabetes (treated as type 1) and pancreatic diseases
I had a drink problem for many years so I understand it was self inflicted when they told me I went to bits as I didn't know alot about diabetes
Luckily which ever way you look at it I was kept in hospital for 3 months where my weight dropped from 15 St to 6.5 st lucky because I had a great diabetes team to help me through and explain afew things to me I still struggle with my BG level as I need carbs to put on weight the diabetes team know this and try to advise me the best they can
I'm now upto 9st 8lb in weight.

4 weeks ago my daughter passed away after a short fight with cancer she was 27.
My BG levels went ballistic but the team assured me it was normal I still have high spikes yesterday was 26.4 but no where near as often as I did I'm usually between 6-9
I'm looking forward to reading and hopefully getting some great advice from members who are having the same issues as me with diabetes
I have not had a drink for 7 months now so quite proud of that and I know my daughter would be as well

Hello and welcome. I am so sorry to read of your difficult times this year - you have my deepest sympathy - and congratulate you on coming to grips with your diabetes through your lifestyle changes. Joining this Forum will give you lots of support and the Learning zone is full of helpful information. I'm sure the regular Type 1 and Type 3c posters will soon make themselves known to you. So very sorry for your heartbreaking loss. Not at all surprising that your levels have gone haywire. Hopefully things will stabilize a bit as time goes on and you learn to come to terms with your loss.

You have every right to be incredibly proud of yourself in avoiding the drink. I hope that gets easier for you as time goes on too.

Which insulins are you on and do you have Freestyle Libre sensors or are you relying on finger pricks for your BG levels.
Have you been offered an intensive education course like DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating) or whatever your local equivalent is. There is an online equivalent called BERTIE that you can self refer onto I believe but the face to face courses are hugely beneficial because you get to mix with other Type 1s and possibly another Type 3c if you are lucky and you learn so much from each other. Definitely worth asking your DSN about putting you forward for such a course.

Anyway, hope you find the forum beneficial. We have a "Group 7-day waking average" thread in the "General section where we post our morning waking readings and exchange a bit of chat each day if you fancy getting to know some of us a bit better. The 7-day average thing got abandoned a long while ago and it is now more of a "daily check in". I will post the link below..... Please feel free to join us today or tomorrow or whenever if you fancy it...

I'm on levemir and novarapid and still have to prick my finger
My DSN has mention the libre to me and also mentioned some educational classes but nothing has been set up yet
 
Levemir is a good basal insulin, particularly if you have a variable lifestyle. Are you on a split dose of it? I found Novo(notso)Rapid unfortunately and I am now on Fiasp which is a little quicker but my body is quite slow to absorb insulin but rather too keen to break down anything vaguely resembling carbs into glucose. How are you getting on with them?

Libre is brilliant when it works but it has had reliability issues. Most of us would not be without it despite the occasional frustration due to failure. Abbott who manufacture it, are offering a free 2 week trial to people who qualify.... basically diabetics who haven't used it before and have a suitable phone to use as a reader. So it is worth checking out the Libre website and perhaps giving it a go. Most of have found the system a real gamechanger as you can see what your levels are doing day and night. It makes adjusting your basal insulin and getting it balanced so much easier and having the right basal insulin dose is essential to good management.

So sorry to hear of your loss.
Well done on all the progress you've made.
Dealing with absorbing food (or not), and the diabetes management can be quite a challenge. I remember finding it very hard, shortly after the pancreatitis, struggling to eat and trying to juggle Creon doses and blood glucose levels.
I did a lot of testing to keep track of my levels and now have Libre prescribed. I find it so useful. If you're offered it (or as @rebrascora suggests you can try an sensor from the free trial) you may find it a real help when levels can be unpredictable with the absorption issues.

So sorry to hear about your daughter, and about your diabetes diagnosis too. What an extremely difficult time you have been having :(

I am sure you are right, your daughter would be very proud of the way you have been able to respond to all that life is throwing at you, and each day without drink is a real victory.

Glad your weight is stabilising, and well done on managing to keep your BGs in line for a lot of the time. Stress, emotions, anxiety and grief-anger can all impact your BG levels, so be kind to yourself, and don’t expect perfection.
