Hi All

My name is Lynda, I was diagnosed type 2 in 1999 and last year I was told Type 1, so all very strange and getting used to injecting 4 times a day instead of 1. I used to work in a hospital and got great help with my diabetes, but now I don?t the hospital looking after me is very strange you never get to see same person 😡. I am off work at moment resting my feet as I have problems with them and now I?m having trouble with my blood sugars they seem to be going up and up no matter what I do. Any help you can give me would be great

Lynda 🙂

Welcome Lynda

I assume that your current 4 insulin injections per day are 1 x long acting and 3 x short acting with meals? The key to blood glucose control using insulin is to vary insulin doses to take account of carbohydrate in (known as "carb counting"), plus other aspects such as exercise, weather, infection, stress etc. Have you had any instructions about carb counting? Some areas run courses, such as DAFNE (Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating). An online course is available at http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/

Welcome to the forums Lynda 🙂

Welcome Lynda.................

Thats strange about your diagnosis, must of been a really slow onset.......

With rising blood sugars comes the need for more insulin, finding out were and why is the fun part........🙄

Welcome to the forum. I'm having probems controlling my BG too and was only recently diagnosed so cant really advise you but I hope it all gets easier for you. Everyone here is really supportive🙂

Hi Lynda
If you get the chance to do the DANFE course do it , I did this year in March after being T1 for just over 3 years , It helped me so much as ot all about carb counting , It covers so much more and puts you in control
I was unsure about the course before I did it , but its the best thing I have done since getting T1 and you get to meet others with T1 and thats helps talking to them and finding your not alone etc

Welcome

Thank you all for the wonderful welcome

I have not had access to a course yet, would welcome at mo with all problems, Have increases the doses for long acting to see if this will help matters and will look at links on line thanks for advice

Hi Lynda a late welcome to the forum from me

Lynda

Hi firstly!

Are there any alternative hospitals you could attend? There is no reason why you can't transfer your diabetes checks to some place else if you aren't happy with what you are getting at the mo. Plus you should at least be able to get in touch with 'your' Diabetes Specialist Nurse by phone. You might think that's only for an emergency and don't think you are one - but it isn't for that, I assure you.

If you need help, most of em (if they are anything like, and most of em are!) would rather give it to you 'now' than hear 6 months later you've been struggling.

I attend a very large teaching hospital and the service there was awful - used to cancel clinic appointments one after the other and the next one was always at least 6 months from the first. Took me 10 years to discover they had a satellite at a smaller hosp in another town, when I attended the carb-counting course which is delivered there, for the whole area. It's a smaller clinic. The same doctors, but they all have time for you there (they probably don't in reality, but they never make you feel like that) OK it's half an hour down the motorway to get there. I'd still go there if it took 2 hours.

And a DSN I can phone. text or even turn up to see if I really need to. (she even met me half way to bring me some supplies I desperately needed - on a Sunday afternoon!)
