Type 1
Hello everyone. Type 1. Had diabetes for a while and I'm now finally joining the community for a bit of support and to share my own encouragement and experience with others. I've referred to the forums before when I've been looking for tips or answers but I've never really engaged with any other diabetics and mostly dealt with it on my own. I was diagnosed as an adult, several years ago, with Type 1. Since then I've been in an extended honeymoon period which has lasted more than 5 years but appears to be finally wearing off. Looking forward to being part of the community 🙂

Welcome to the forum @DavidK

Glad that you have decided to join in and I look forward to hearing more from you.
If you are happy to do so it would be great to hear how you manage your T1such as:
which insulin(s), MDI or pump, Libre?

Welcome @DavidK.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions you may have as it's very unlikely that someone hasn't already experienced the area of your question.

Best

Welcome to the forum @DavidK

You will see there are many personalities on the forum - some are more "chatty" than others, some share more than others, some mostly just read, some post jokes, ....

Ask any questions, rant about frustrations, crack a joke or just read, learn and laugh.

Hi @DavidK I’m in a similar situation, only just joined the forum but been diabetic for 13 years. Hoping like you for some support form the community 🙂

Hi @DavidK I'm also new to the forum. I was initially diagnosed T1 in 2013 but I'm actually a T2. I still use insulin & carb count though, so treat my diabetes the same as I did when I was initially diagnosed T1.
It's great here, the people are friendly & always have useful advice/experience.

Thank you. I manage T1 with Levemir and Novorapid. I also wear a libre constantly. My insulin ratios fluctuate from time to time as my body still seems to be producing a trickle of insulin, or that's what the consultant says, but it's not consistent so dosing is a daily math puzzle, which I'm sure everyone here knows all about 🙂

Hi, nice to talk. I agree. I have supportive friends and family but talking to someone who just 'gets it' because they've gone through it as well is an added bonus. Happy to listen if you want to share anything.

Hi @Wheelz, nice to hear from you. Looking forward to meeting more of the community. Carb counting really helps me too although I've never learned to do it, mostly just reading the back of packets or referring to a book the hospital gave me when I was first diagnosed. I'm sure I could learn more

Thank you 🙂
Carb counting is trial & error sometimes, an educated guess and keep the glucose tablets handy. Like anything, it gets easier and your guesses become more & more educated over time.
I have point blank refused to even try oral medication because (in my opinion) nothing can give you the absolute control that carb counting & insulin can.

i must admit, I have learnt more by trial and error than anything anyone could ever teach you. I have done structured education and carb counting, I’ve got the books, but I find reading packets works best for me. We all have to foods that need more insulin than others that are more unique to us than another diabetic. My ratios range from 1:10 to 4:10 for some foods, it’s all about what works for you.

Welcome to the forum @DavidK

Glad you have joined us, and hope you find it helpful to compare notes with others, while also offering support and sharing your own experiences.

There are a lot of years of lived diabetes experience on the forum, any yet we are all learning a little more every day about what our diabetes is up to 🙂
