Hi Mossy - it's good to meet you.

How are things with you?

I'm a Type 2 myself, also just like you I was diagnosed in 2000. I myself learnt very little in the first eight years - however, I've made up for things over the last twelve months.

The most important lesson that I have learnt is the importance of cutting back dramatically on the starchy carbohydrates that I eat - i.e. cereals, bread, potatoes mainly - but also rice and and pasta. Doing that leads to a very big and sudden lowering of blood glucose levels for most Type 2s.

Best wishes - John

Thanks for the welcome John. Im similar to yourself, in as much as the past 8 years ive done nothing of real value for my diabetes.

So ive joined a couple of forums and ive been reading a lot of stuff. Im finding it difficult as my diet was very carb laden, all as advised by my diabetes clinic. Making the change is hard, I love Wholemeal bread, Basmati Rice, and i have an almost 95% vegetarian diet, but it seems not to be ideal.

So at the moment im on a learning curve

regards brian.

Brian, again welcome. Another element I've found challenging getting to grips with is portion sizes - for example, 30g wholemeal bread isn't a lot - and I think advice about how much a portion is could be much more clearly presented. Worth getting to grips with tho

Hi Brian,

Yes - that's the way it seems to be. Certainly, what I was told to do and it made things slowly worse for me. I have a petition on 10 Downing Stree about the matter. Perhaps, you'd be willing to offer your support:

I'm not vegetarian but I don't usually eat a lot of meat. Quite often if there is a vegetarian option I eat that way myself. I eat a fairly low fat diet.

I find that I can eat a lot of fruit without that causing my blood glucose levels to rise unduly. I snack on fruit between meals at intervals of an hour or longer.

I haven't found changing my diet to be difficult at all really. I'm eating better than I've ever done in my entire life.

Best wishes - John
