Hello I was diagnosed Monday last week after two results came back at 49 and 50. No need for meds just manage it by diet. Weight at 77KG so got to get that down. Healthcare people are putting me through everything at the moment which is nice for the support. Just ordered the Cals and Carbs book as I am at a loss to what is right just at the moment. Going for an ECG on Friday , feet checked and my eyes will be done soon and they want me to go on statins as my cholesterol is high too . Have found some lovely recipes on here which I have tried.

Hi! Did you know if you lower the amount of carbohydrate you eat, not only should you lose weight - but also your total chol and especially your LDL - which is the one they panic about LOL - should reduce too!

So - if it was me (I wouldn't take a statin anyway as I had dreadful loss of memory with them) - I would say 'I'll try to reduce my chol by dietary means, as well as control my diabetes and lose weight - so can I please have a go at that in peace for a while - and we can revisit it ALL next time you run all the relevant blood tests'. Which they will be doing in 3 or 6 months time anyway.

Hi Visionvalue, welcome to the forum 🙂 It sounds like your healthcare team are on the ball, which is great news 🙂 I'd suggest having a read of Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter and getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker - these should all give you a good understanding of diabetes and what you need to do to manage it well 🙂 Hope the ECG goes well on Friday. As TW says, carbs can be the culprit where high cholesterol is concerned, plus it is often high at diagnosis and may reduce naturally as you make your adaptations to your diet and activity levels - do you know what the level was?

Please let us know if you have any questions - nothing is considered 'silly' and there is always someone here who can help! 🙂

Welcome to the forum. The carbs and cals book is a great help.

just to say 'welcome' and no one told me how mathematical diabetes was going to be!😱

My cholesterol was 7.2 when diagnosed, but they didn't even suggest statins for me.
