Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi there, my name is Adam and was diagnosed with type1 on my 45th birthday.
I'm 50 next month and pre diabetes I was drinking really heavily and having endured 5 inpatient stays with agonising pancreatitis my pancreas finally said enough is enough so for me it happened overnight.
Ironically the one good thing that did come out of my diagnosis was that from that day I never touched another drop of alcohol so in the bigger picture type1 actually saved my life.
Anyway I have visited the site on a number of occasions to find answers to some of my questions and thought it was about time I joined up.
I do have a couple of questions to find answers to and will look on the forums but may draw on your vast wealth of knowledge if you don't mind d I can't find the answers.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on your massive achievement

Hello @brisr949
Welcome to the forum and good to know that you have already found it useful.
Although it has caused you serious problems, it is gret that you have succeeded in getting through them, and have seen a 'benefit' from diabetes!
Many of us do in various ways, and I certainly have a healthier lifestyle since before diagnosis.

Look forward you joining in some threads, and please ask away on the questions you have.
As you already know there is an incredible amount of experience and knowledge here.

Welcome to the forum @brisr949

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis, but congratulations on your sobriety! What a positive change to have made.

Feel free to ask away with any questions you may have. Or even just to moan and rant about the confusing and fickle antics of the Diabetes Fairy, who loves to throw random curveballs into the mix of our days just to confuse us and keep us on our toes.

Having lots of other people to connect with who instinctively ‘get it’ can be a great help, and can reduce the sense of isolation that a diagnosis with diabetes can bring, where you may not know anyone close to you with T1.

Glad to have you here 🙂

I'll add to ED&D's congrats on eliminating the alcohol. Well done. Use the same will power and you will get your blood glucose under control I am sure.

I enjoy the odd pint or a glass of malt but I've just looked up some stats and found that around 7000 a year die from alcohol-specific diseases, that is their death was wholly related to their alcohol intake. If looked at in terms of premature death rate, alcohol is a bigger problem than coronavirus. That's a sobering thought in itself.

First off thank you for the nice welcomes. And yes if I wasnt diagnosed it's a guarantee I wouldn't be here today as were on my last warnings. The next big thing that has to go is the equally terrible nicotine and that will be very very soon.

Ah, smoking that's worse than alcohol in the premature death stats. If you can bin that then dealing with covid and diabetes should be a doddle. Go for it and good luck!

Hello and welcome @brisr949 , glad you've found us 🙂

Well done on all the changes you've made after T1 came calling. Ask any questions you can't find answers to, there's a wealth of experience on here and someone has probably experienced something similar or can find a useful link for information.

Hi Adam, I know this thread is a month old and just came across your post in the 7 day waking average and thought I would have a look at your first post. Well done on your big changes so far. I’m T2 myself so we have different challenges but nevertheless we are still all in the same boat, doing our best, sometimes better than others. Just wanted to say hello myself. Finding it more difficult if late to answer/comment on posts as always seem to have something else to do, nothing exciting though. Thought I was going to be at home for some time but actually was recalled to work, 2 days after they said to stay at home - and I work for the nhs haha. Anyway good luck to you and will have a look out for your posts. Best wishes Sue x

Thank you sue, thats very sweet of you.
Hugs, Adam.x
