Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all. New member joined today. 🙂
I've has type 2 for about 10 years, but never really paid much attention to it (did lose 8 stone when first diagnosed but thats all gone back on !). Hated the patronising way my GP practise "helped " me (stick thin dietician who criticised pretty much everything I ate 😡, nurse who said I must lose weight (and was very overweight herself:confused:), and podiatrist who did not have English as her first language, very difficult to understand.
Gave them up after a couple of visits.
Hoping to get some advice / guidance from people who have suffered 😱this illness, not "profesionals" who just regergitate from a book, and maybe contribute from my own experiences

Hello Buzby, welcome. Your post could almost have been written by me!

Hi Buzby, welcome to the forum 🙂 Good for you for deciding to take this by the throat and get back on top of things! Are you on any medication for your diabetes?

I think a good starting point would be to start a food diary so that you can identify just what you are eating and drinking (with particular attention to the carbohydrate content). Then, you can look for areas that you can improve on, either by reducing portion size, substituting with more 'diabetes-friendly' items, or excluding from your diet altogether.

I would suggest reading Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter - these give a good plan for getting things under control. How about joining our Weight-Loss Group also, so that you can share experiences, tips and encouragement?

How about exercise? Are you able to do much? Have a read of Silkman Bob's story for a bit of inspiration:

Welcome to the forums Buzby 🙂

Hi Buzby, is the name because you worked in the phone industry ? Welcome & ask away. This is very positive place to be part of 🙂

Goodness me that was quick.
Many thanks for the welcomes LeeLee, Northener (in Southampton ), Mark T and HOBIE.
Good idea about the diary, not to sure what the emphasis on Carbohydrates is all about, but no doubt will become clear with a bit more research.
Lots of questions about driving insurance premiums :( if I need meds in the future , how to work out what to 😛 (and not :( ) eat, and how to feel a bit more energised.
Oh yes, and how to lose weight (and keep it off !)
Hopefully catch up with you all soon
Regards

Buzby, diabetes is all about carbohydrates. All carbs are converted to glucose which will raise your blood sugar levels, so things like bread, potatoes, rice, pasta, sweets etc. are the main things you need to be looking at when trying to get good control 🙂

I'm a Yorkshireman, now living dahn sarf! 🙂
