Hi, Just found this forum 🙂 I have had type 2 diabetes for nearly 3 years, Im on insulin all the time but my body still produces sometimes so its still try and error with the insulin doses :-( but must admit its not as bad as I thought it would be when diagnosed.

Hi AlfRules, welcome to the forum 🙂 How long have you been on insulin and what regime are you on? Do you count carbs or take fixed doses?

Lots of friendly people here with all sorts of experience, so if there's anything you want to know, please ask! 🙂

Hi Alfrules and a warm welcome to the forum

Welcome to the forum AlfRules 🙂

Hi Alf? welcome to the nuthouse. I will await your response to Northerner's question (it's useful to add your regime to your signature as a lot of us have failing memories:D)

Hi again, nearly did not get in as im very new to computers and could net get my password to work.

I take novarapid 3 times a day & ledemir at night, we tryed counting carbs alone but it did not seem to work for me.

So Im counting carbs and trying to adjust the doses depending on how much carbs I eat but Im findding it very hard deciding what dose to take as I have not been given a claculator to decide ie if I eat x amount of carbs, what does should I take ? is there an online calculator or something I could try ?

They suggested 5 in morning, 10 at lunch, 12 at supper & 8 at night, but Im meant to adjust these depending on what I eat but Im struggling to decide what values to use for differant carbs eaten.

Hope that makes sense 🙂

Also thanks for the warm welcome, if I could ask aother question, how do I add a signature ?

Yes, it does make sense Alf, but it sounds like they haven't given you enough education about carb-counting and how it's all supposed to work. In a nutshell, you have a carb to insulin ratio, that is you inject one unit of insulin for every X grams of carb that you want to eat. Unfortunately, there is no standard calculator to do this for you, because you have to establish what 'X' is by trial and experience.

Usually, people start with a ratio of 1:10, which means they inject one unit of insulin for every 10g of carbs in the meal. By testing before and after eating (at 1 and two hour intervals) you can determine if this is too much (your levels fall too low), or too little (your levels stay too high). If, for example, levels were too high you might adjust your ratio so that you had 1:8 or one unit per 8g carbs, effectively giving yourself a higher dose. Similarly of your levels were too low you might change the ratio to 1:12 and therefore give yourself less insulin.

There are other factors to consider, like time of day, activity levels etc. but this is a good starting point. There is a very good online course that goes into all the details at: http://www.bdec-e-learning.com/ or you might find the Diabetes UK download at http://www.diabetes.org.uk//upload/How we help/catalogue/Carbs-Count-2012.pdf helpful 🙂

Also thanks for the warm welcome, if I could ask aother question, how do I add a signature ?

Click on 'User CP' (User Control Panel) in the upper left of the forum screen. From there, click on 'Edit Signature' 🙂
