Type 3c
Hi,

My name is Symon (Pronounced Simon). I have had type 3c for roughly 18 months and thought I would join the forum for general support and advise.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Take care.

Symon.

Welcome to the forum Symon.

Hi Symon and welcome from me as well. There will always be someone who can answer any questions you have. It won't be me as I'm a plain old T2, but there are 3cs here who'll be able to help and empathise 🙂

Hi Symon and welcome from me too.

Can you tell us a bit more about how you manage your 3c.... like which insulin(s) you use and if you also take Creon.
Do you have any of the tech like Libre sensors or maybe even an insulin pump..... not sure if we have any 3cs with a pump but you could always be a first if we don't!
Is there anything particular which frustrates you about your diabetes or you find especially difficult to manage?

Any other information you would like to share with us? We will be happy to get to know you better.

Welcome to the forum @SBorny.

I will flag @eggyg who is another 3c, along with others on here.
If you would like to, tell us how you manage your Diabetes.
This will help us tailor any advice we offer.

and eggyg is a pumper too, not sure about Karnak?

Welcome to the forum @SBorny

Sorry to hear about your diagnosis. How did it come about? Was it surgical? prancreatitis? or something else?

Look forward to hearing more of your story.

Ask away with any questions 🙂

Hi Barbara,

Apologies for not responding sooner.

I use Lantus (30 units at night) and Nova Rapid (between 18 and 24 with meals dependant on blood levels). I do use Creon and currently have to take 5 25000 capsules with each main meal and 4 with each snack. Unfortunately for me I also have chronic liver disease so that adds complications as well. I wish I could have a freestyle or pump as it would make a massive difference as because of liver, pancreas and other ailments I current have to take 42 tablets every day as well as the insulin injections. I am constantly told that they are only offered to type 1 patients.

The only frustration I have is that the blood sugars are hard to control at the moment as I am having to adjust the Creon as well which affects my absorption rate of the food I eat. So as that changes my insulin has to change to compensate.

Thanks for asking and let me know if you want any more information from me.

Cheers,

Symon.

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the delay in responding.

I suffered with 10 bouts of pancreatitis over 5 years and they could not find what was causing it. I was referred to King Hospital London and they found a legion on my pancreas. Thank fully it cleared on its own. My last attack was in March 2019 and then 2 weeks after coming out of hospital, I was rushed back in with blood sugars of over 35. So basically the pancreas was too damaged. I was diagnosed as type 3c at that point. Unfortunately since then I have been told I have chronic liver disease. (someone doesn't like me. I hardly touch the drink as well. I don't touch it at all now.) So with the liver, pancreas and a myriad of other ailments I have to take 412 tablets a day as well as the insulin.

Cheers,

Symon.

Hi again Symon

Thanks for that extra info. It sounds like you have a lot to deal with. My mother had 3 acute bouts of pancreatitis, two of which nearly killed her and I am told the pain is excruciating, so you have my sympathies.
When you say that you use between 18 and 24 units of NovoRapid with meals is that for each meal or for the whole day? Just trying to get a picture of where you are at.
As regards your access to tech like Freestyle Libre, the Type 3c members here on the forum are mostly treated as Type 1s and I believe therefore do qualify, although I think some had to fight for their Type 1 treatment status. I wonder if the Diabetes UK helpline might be able to help with advocacy on that score or if the regular Type 3c members can give some pointers on how to go about it.... @eggyg and @Hepato-pancreato... Can either of you help?

Hi,

That Nova Rapid is per meal, also I have add corrections if required at 1 unit per 3 glucose units over my target, up to a maximum of 4 units. My range is meant to be between 7 and 9.

You are not wrong about the pain of pancreatitis. I have a high pain threshold, but that is something else. I had one episode where it was touch and go if I needed to go to ICU. Thankfully I didn't.

Cheers,

Symon.

Hi Symon. Sorry I missed this when you first posted. I am Type 3c. Also caused by pancreatitis but unlike you I only had one acute attack caused by gallstones. I didn’t become diabetic then but a few years later when it was discovered I had a tumour ( fortunately pre cancerous) and had most of my pancreas removed. At least your team knew straight from the off you were Type 3c, I was put in the Type 2 pigeon hole. I know, unbelievable isn’t it? It did take years of me doing my own research and badgering them to before they conceded that I was actually a Type 3c and receive the treatment I need now and for the future. I must admit I haven’t gone down the route of a Libre, although I have self funded it at times, or a pump as I’m reasonably well controlled. I have had “ you’re not a proper Type 1” speech blah blah blah. You just need to keep on at them, it only took me 8 years! Hopefully it won’t take you as long as that. Good luck and any questions please fire away. Elaine
