Hey there , been diagnosed type2 for 8 months now , on 1000mg metformin slow release and statins for cholesterol. Just experienced my first hyper . Any tips on how to avoid these ?
 
High blood glucose usually results from the foods we eat - are you testing your blood and adjusting your diet to keep numbers down?

was told I don’t need to check blood just doing the hba1c test and test urine daily .
 
So you have no chance of fine tuning your diet to normal numbers - not if you take such advice.
I got a meter straight away and aimed for normal - which I am just on the edge of now - the foods which spiked me got the heave ho, and low carb foods are now my staple diet.

So you think it’s worth getting one ? My wife thinks it’s a good idea also . What shall I look for in one ?
 
Hyper is high. Hypo is low. Having just been diagnosed, you've probably had high blood glucose (BG) levels for awhile.

Yes it is. Look for one that has the chest test strips. The SD Codefree had been suggested a few times. Someone mentioned there's a replacement model. Can't remember the name.
You can use it you can use it to find out the effect pet food have, as well as any changes you make.
 
Quite a few people rely on their meters to show them what they can - or in my case, can't eat - there is a lot of variation - some can eat oats, or potatoes - I just spike eating any high carb foods.
I went to the Spirit Healthcare site, joined up, sent a confirmatory email back, to get the VAT off as a diagnosed diabetic, and then ordered a Tee 2 meter, strips and lancets, and some control solution, used for checking the meter. Now I can check at any time and get an accurate assessment of progress, or if I should eat dessert - quick and easy.

Hello @Bakerboy and welcome to the forum

As @Drummer says, although it is not totally necessary, many of us find that a meter is an extremely useful way to keep blood sugar levels under control and avoid hypers.

It will help you find out which foods cause your blood sugars to rise, and eventually arrive at a lists that lets you maintain good blood sugar levels, that you enjoy eating, and fits your lifestyle in terms of how much preparation and cooking you like and have time to do.

The idea is to test before and 2 hours after eating. (The aim is to have a rise of 2 or less) Also if you can keep a tally of the total number of carbs eaten in a day, your morning reading will guide you on working out how much you need to adjust your eating.
SD Gluco Navii is one of the cheaper options, but there are several others. test-review-adjust will give you some more information on testing.

I'm not sure what eating plan you are following, there are several options but many of us find that we have a low carbohydrate tolerance and reducing carbs brings blood sugar levels down. Maggie Davey's letter, gives some more ideas on this.
Another good source of information is to join the Learning Zone, and there is a Tab for this at the top of this site.
There is also a great deal of information available if you browse around the site.

I was told that I was a very bad diabetic, and I wanted to be sure that there was no reason for my GP to want me back on tablets, so I went for less than 8 after eating. When I managed that, I stuck to the same meals/foods and saw the numbers reduce down to less than 7, and when I saw less than 6 after both Christmas dinners with our offspring, I knew I had it beaten.
