Hi

My name is Megan and I'm 24. I was diagnosed in January after suffering for 6 months with kidney infections before sugar was found in my urine. I'm early onset type 2. Both my parents are type 2 but seem to have an easier time of it than I do.

I'm on 4 glucophage 500mg and 2 1/2 gliclazide daily in 2 doses.
My diagnosis HBa1c was 13.5 in Jan
End of march HBa1c was 8.1
Had a blood test this morning but obv dont know the results yet.

Feeling a bit depressed really as I think my sugars are still not under control and I can't eat very much carb at all. I aim for about 25g of carb in a main meal which is not much and hard to stick to. I'm hoping to get an appointment with a dietician soon!

So enough of my life story. Hello! 🙂

Hi Megan, welcome to the forum 🙂 It looks like you have made a good improvement in your HbA1c, I hope this trend continues with your latest result 🙂

Do you test your blood before and after meals to find out how the different foods affect you? If not, then I would recommend asking (insisting!) your doctor for the means to do this, as it is the best way to tailor your diet to your body's tolerances whilst retaining a good amount of flexibility in what you eat. If you haven't already got a copy, I would recommend getting Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, which will give you a really good grounding in understanding your diabetes and how to manage it well - many of our members swear by it! 🙂 Also, if your doctor has not yet suggested it, ask what diabetes education courses are available for you in your area, they are generally very worthwhile and one of the main benefits is getting to meet others who share your situation. Examples are DESMOND and XPert.

If there is anything that is concerning or confusing you then please do let us know. There are hundreds of friendly, experienced people here who will be only too happy to help, and no questions is considered 'silly'!

I look forward to hearing more from you, please let us know how the tests go 🙂

hi Megan.... welcome to the forum. you've done really well to get your HbA1c result down so far..... I hope that today's results continue to improve.

I can't eat many carbs either, before my BG levels reach high levels.... so I get most of them from my veggies. IMHO Northerner is right.... you need to test with a meter to find out what foods affect you.... and the Gretchen Becker book is brilliant!!

keeping my fingers crossed for you that your HbA1c result is a good one x

Welcome to the forum Megan 🙂

Unfortunately a dietitian will most likely tell you eat more carb - which isn't all that helpful 🙄

The one ray of hope is that you are eating a similar amount of carbs per day to what I was consuming when I was trying to loose some weight (but then again, you might not be overweight).

Once I normalised my numbers a little I was able to relax a bit and add more carbs (although I've started going back up again).

Hi, I will deffinately look into that book

I did used to test before every meal and 2 hours after every meal when i was first diagnosed but became so obsessed with the results that the hospital told me to stop testing. I do still have my meter though and test when I don't 'feel right'. I generally know when I'm too high (over 10) as for some reason I get a reaction of little painful shocks up my legs and spine. The hospital consultant said that some people get this reaction from the metformin?

I'm glad I'm not the only one who seems to have a massive issue with small amounts of carb then!

Thanks for the advice Trophywench x

Megan hi and a warm welcome to the forum x

Welcome and try not to be too hard on yourself, I don't think anyone can have full control over diabetes.

You just have to manage as best you can under different circumstances and learn from any mistakes.

I'm a bit late with the welcome, but I wanted to emphasise that the reduction from over 13 to 8.1 in a couple of months is fine and dandy in my book. 🙂

If you can keep that level of progress up then you'll be well on the way to having good control.

You will have blips, but if you can regain control afterwards, that's as good as anyone can do.

It'd be nice to know the result of the last test. I bet it's less than 8.1%!

Andy 🙂
