Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hi everyone, just found this site, looks interesting. i have type 1 and was diagnosed in 2002 (originally as type 2, probably because i was a little overweight and had no family history). Have been taking insulin since August 2004, almost 6 years to the day. I found it really hard to accept at first, and there are still days when I'm in denial, but i attended a DAFNE course recently and it really helped to demonstrate that i can control it, if i want to. my hba1c is currently high at 11, but i'm hoping to bring this down, especially as i want to have a baby and have been told that under no circumstances am i to consider it unless i'm down to at around 7. Doctor said it should take 6 to 9 months. Anyone been through this? Elli

Hi Elli just wanted to welcome you to the forum.Cant answer your question but just wanted to say have a good browse around this place you will soon become accquainted this place is very welcoming and supportive.Good luck x

Hi Elli, welcome to the forum 🙂 Your A1c is high - almost what mine was when diagnosed - but hopefully the DAFNE training will help you to reduce this in the coming months. We've got quite a few members who have had children (or are currently pregnant!) with diabetes, so I'll leave it to them to give you better advice than I could!

Hi & welcome Elli
There's lots of research and personal anecdotes that DAFNE graduates do bring down their HbA1c dramatically - the best improvements are seen in people with the highest pre-DAFNE HbA1c, like yourself. So, you're on the right track to getting your level down ready to start trying to conceive. There is a Pregnancy section of this forum, which covers before, during and after pregnancy, mostly from mothers' points of view, but some fathers also join in - more would be even better.

Welcome to the forums...........

My pre DAFNE Hb1Ac was 11.9, 12 is the maximum you can have or you cant attend........six months later I was down to 8.......

If you stick to the principals I am almost certain you will experience a similar drop........

Again, welcome.............

PS Have you visited www.dafneonline.co.uk.....if you fire in the number you were given you register as a graduate and have access to the forums, online diary with graphs and charts and more importantly, other graduates who are practicing DAFNE too........hope to see you there

Welcome to the forum, I was diagnosed with Type 1 in April this year and have found the forum to be a most excellent source of help and advice.
