I am Lisa, 46 yr old and diagnosed with type 2 about 18mths ago.

I am on tablets rather than insulin but in all honesty I am struggling badly. I am overweight, and do not have the healthiest of diets.

I am really wanting to change however one of the biggest issues I have is that most fruit and vegetable upset my stomach.. I have IBS and it is very sensitive.. often within just half hour of eating some things I am dashing off to the loo in pain.

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for how to cut the calories (and sugar!!) but without just relying on veggies.. ? I can eat processed peas and carrots.. but can't live on those lol!!

Many thanks for any advice.. and hello to all 🙂

Hi Lisa, welcome to the forum :D I am sorry you are finding things tough, it is frustrating when you have additional complications! I’m not sure what to advise about the veg issue but I do know there are others on here with similar challenges so I am sure they will respond. Do have a look at some of the other threads to get some ideas and support. There are a couple of threads about food so you should find some useful tips there.

You might find that a healthier diet generally helps your gut become less sensitive. I recently posted about what to eat after a particularly bad bout of IBS which you should be able to find if you search for my posts. I received a lot of support and helpful answers from fellow sufferers so hopefully it might help you too.
Generally as a semi-pescatarian (I eat fish but not very often and only if there isn’t a suitable veggie option) I eat masses of vegetables and my bouts of IBS are few and far between. I used to suffer more often when I was eating more starchy carbs.

Hi Lisa,

My wife also suffers from bad IBS. Everyone's IBS is different (a bit like diabetes) by she found that taking probiotics daily has helped calm things down a bit. Trying to increase the amount of "good" bacteria in your intestines.

Have you been able to isolate down to individual foods or food groups?
Do you eat meat? Chicken and fish can be helpful.

Hi Lisa, welcome to the forum. I can`t comment on your condition but to tell you I eat lots of veg and salad the IBS side of it settled down after a while.

thank you all for the welcome and the advice.. my tummy is a tricky one lol!!.. I used to be able to eat everything and anything fruit and veg wise.. (other than sprout.. yack! ) however i got pregnant in 1998.. and suddenly developed an allergy to mushrooms.. (they now make me vomit and rush to loo if i eat them.. and i used to love them!) and the allergy didn't go away.. and each time during a pregnancy (I've had 4) I have ended up being sensitive to something i usually ate.. and sadly the sensitivity stuck even after babies were born. I have tried narrowing it all down.. but it seems as though it is also hit and miss.. sometimes something i think affects me may not next time. Oh to have a normal tummy ! 🙂 Anyhow.. i shall try what has been suggested.. maybe just a little of it.. perhaps me trying to eat more veg overloaded my system too much all at once.. so after reading your comments I will try again but this time rather than rush in i will do a gradual increase 🙂 thanks again!

Check out the food thread. I did and I'm loving the new food regime, don't miss anything I used to wolf down. With your added ailment ibs there are probably people on here in the same boat so you may get good advice. Good luck and welcome 🙂
