Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
hi there,
been diaganosed type 2 since 1997 (steroid induced:( ) and been in denial since then really, even my dad dying from diabetic effects didnt make me take my condition serious.
two years after being diaganosed i was told tablets are not working and need to go on insulin, i have worked on the railways since aged 16 and was a train driver at the time so refused as it would stop me driving trains.
all the jobs i have done and doing now are all classed "safety critical" so have refused insulin up till now... i have now hit the brick wall, i have mild retinopathy, neuropathy and maculopathy hba1c -13.3 and bloods of 17.5.
i am now 40 and regret being so arrogant and blase of condition.
im starting on victoza but my consultant holds no hope and expects to put me on insulin after a month.. which will effect my work no doubt.
just thought id say hi.. im not all doom n gloom lol

mat

Welcom to the site.......................insulin might not be a bad thing.........especially now you are experiencing some mild complications.........im type 1 and am experiecing retinopathy and i have only had it for 11 years..............

Insulin dependancy only restricts you from driving HGVs and large passenger carying vehicles.................is that what you do know?

thanks for the welcome,
no i am a safety trainer that trains track workers and involves taking them out on track and as soon as insulin is used you are automatically restricted and effects all training i do whether it is the classroom or practical on track.
if it was not for type of work im involved in i would of gone on insulin years ago, its not the fear of insulin but fear of not being able to do my specific job im doing now.

hope that clarifys a bit.

I think a bit more investigation would be needed as its on the trains.........the fact your trainning people might be a positive towards it.......theres always going to be someone there with you, and it should only be relevant when actually on the train track, not in a classroom.........

It will be interesting to see how it pans out.........please keep us updated...........

Hi there and a warm welcome i was started on meds then out onto byetta it is similier to victoza it has done wonders for me and others as well , so i do hope the victoza does work for you, if anything prove your consultant wrong and show he was wrong to have no faith x

Hi Mat Sorry you find yourself on here but you will find it's a great help.

Off subject slightly but I heard Taxi drivers have to stop driving if the go onto insulin?

Hi Mat, I'm like Steffie and am on Byetta. I think it works in a similar way. I thought I'd never be well ever again just before I was given it and now am so much better. Be optomistic and make it work for you. I had to work at it and change my diet big time. I also had to put up with a bit of nausea to begin with but it has really been worth it.

Does victoza have a capability to cause an hypo as insulin does?

You will come under the Disability At Work act, and your employer should make reasonable adjustments to accomadate your disability, if that can't be done in your present position, then they should offer another position if reasobly possible within another department... If they terminate your contract without doing this, and it's found that they could have, they acted ilegally and you can have redress against them for unfair dismissal..

But I would contact the DDA, as they can help you with further information and help if require, I would if you are in the union, contact the union Rep...

I can understand as a T1, the safety issues surrounding being responcible for safety at the track side and this may not be possible for you to continue for your and others safety, but the classroom is a different matter, there no safety risk there, so it should be reasonbly possible to have a rejig of the trainers duties, in that you remain in the classroom teaching theory, and another trainer becomes responcible for the track side saftey lessons'

I should imagine your job is some what a specialist job, and it may pay your company divident to rejig duties than find you another position, and incurr the costs of retraining another individual to take your place..

Good luck hope it pans out ok for you.

I found these side effects that can happen through use of victoza, it does mention hypos.

Very common side effects
• Nausea (feeling sick). This usually goes away over time.
• Diarrhoea. This usually goes away over time.
Common side effects
• Hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar). The warning signs of low blood sugar may come on
suddenly and can include: cold sweat, cool pale skin, headache, fast heart beat, feeling sick,
feeling very hungry, changes in vision, feeling sleepy, feeling weak, nervous, anxious,
confused, difficulty concentrating, shaking (tremor). Your doctor will tell you how to treat low
blood sugar and what to do if you notice these warning signs. If you are already taking a
sulphonylurea medicine when you start using Victoza, your doctor may tell you to reduce the
dose of the sulphonylurea.
• Headache
• Vomiting
• Indigestion
• Inflamed stomach (gastritis). The signs include stomach pain, nausea and vomiting.
• Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). The signs include heartburn.
• Painful or swollen tummy (abdomen)
• Abdominal discomfort
• Viral infection in stomach
• Constipation
• Wind (flatulence)
• Decreased appetite
• Bronchitis
• Common cold
• Dizziness
• Fatigue
• Fever
• Toothache
• Injection side reactions (such as bruising, pain, irritation, itching, and rash)
Uncommon side effects
• Pancreatitis

ellie,
they are very wise words.
Unfortunately although my work is 98-99% classroom (theory) based the licences i need to deliver the courses are all safety critical and thus a blanket ban on insulin.
fingers crossed that my consultant and my blood readings allow me to continue with the victoza im starting next week.
its really nice when people you have never met take a direct interest in you thanks all 🙂
