Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
I have been a type 2 diabetic now for some 15 years,and i still need to learn about good average readings,today my waking reading was 6.3 and is about the same each day,my question is are these averages to high or to low,if to high should i leave out my light supper ,which is usually a couple of ryvitas,with a light spread,thanks for any advise given

Hi Dave, welcome to the forum 🙂 6.3 is not bad at all, so I wouldn't be too concerned by that. Are you testing immediately on waking or after you have been up and about a bit? Many people find that their levels begin to climb the instant they climb out of bed - this is due to the liver releasing extra glucose to give you an energy 'boost' in the mornings to set you up for the day, but may not be representative of how your levels have behaved through the night, they may have been lower. If you're not testing immediately on waking then I'd suggest keeping your meter by your bed and trying it before you get up.

Are you on any medication for your diabetes, and do you test at all during the day, in order to see how your meal choices might be affecting your levels? Have a read of Test,Review, Adjust by Alan S to see what I mean by this 🙂

Hi Dave and a warm welcome to our friendly supportive forum - morning levels of 6.3 are nothing to worry about - at least they are averaged the same every morning which shows you have good control of your diabetes. Testing your bgl before you get out of bed should give you a lower number.

Do you exercise i.e. walk? Walking also helps to lower blood glucose levels - I suggest you do this (if you can) about 30 - 45 mins after meals. Nice to see you here Dave, good luck & take care x

Hi Dave. Welcome. I've been diabetic for around 23 years and I'm still learning especially since I joined this site.
Ask as many questions as you need to ok, their is usually someone around that can help.

Welcome to the Forum Dave. I was diagnosed pre-diabetic last year and am on a prevention programme at the moment. Not keen on the "eat well plate" though after what I have learned on here and read in books by Michael Moseley and David Cavan.

I had never heard of blood sugars being higher in the mornings until I came on here. I always thought they were at their lowest. I have now started testing as I need to know which foods affect me as I have found out on here that it all depends on the person and what is good for one is not necessarily any good to someone else.
 
Hi Dave, good to meet you. 6.3 sounds fine to me. How are your levels at other times of the day?
