Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi
I am new to the site, so not sure if I am posting in the right place.

Have been diagnosed with type 2 for a couple of years but to be honest after the initial reaction (a mixture of emotions) I went into denial. I think this was partly due to my husbands reaction when I told him I had been diagnosed, which was "my mate at work has got type 2 and it's not a problem" in other words don't make a big fuss over nothing.

Anyway since then I have not been behaving as though I have diabetes, in fact exactly the opposite, eating anything I want, putting more weight on etc etc.

I have lots of funny ailments which I have no idea whether they are related to this condition or not. The most annoying one is the hot flushes at the slightest onset of a problem I am trying to solve, if I go into a meeting and am even the slightest bit anxious it shows by the fact that I am sweating and red in the face and my hair gets wringing wet. It is really embarrasing and so unprofessional lookiing.

I also get this strange numbness/tingling type feeling in my tongue which is really peculiar, I get restless arms and legs, my memory is appaling and sometimes I am incredibly 'scatty' words come out of my mouth back to front, I can't remenber names of people I have known for years, sometimes I cannot sleep and other times I feel like someone has pulled the plug and I could go to sleep wherever I am at the time, and loads more things. I used to tell the diabetic nurse about all of these (she is really nice) but I don't get any answers.

I have been neglecting myself, I have not been for my last two appointments, so I do not know what my numbers are at the moment. (I was embarrased to go because I was supposed to be losing weight and I kept putting it on) I am planning on trying to get myself on track, hence my visit to this site. I have started to take all my medication again on a regular basis, well mostly, I am on 850 of Metformin twice a day, 100m thyroxin, 40 statins and 20 prozac.

Does anyone else suffer the anxiety type symptoms and do they know how to stop the sweating?

Should I be testing my sugar levels on a regular basis, the doc has not suggested I do this.

This is a bit of a long post - sorry! Would be interested in others symptons experience advice etc.

Hi Saskia and welcome to the forum even if you have not posted in the right place it can be moved by a moderator for you xx

I was reading through your post and it sounded like it could of been me typing it , the only diffirence being i dont have the tingling on the tongue, my sweats are particulary bad at night and i wont even start on my memory i can put something down then less then a minute later forget where it is, and the amount of times i get my words back to front is well beyond a joke, i dont know whether it is diabetes related to be honest.

Regarding testing it is a very personal thing at the start of my diagnosis i was testing 4-5 times a day now i test twice unless hypers occur. Great news you are back taking your meds it is a pain and most of us must rattle but they do the job there intended to do hopefully.Do you have anyone that can go to any appointments with you , it is always a good idea to try and attend appointments then at least you know the changes that can be made are being made.

Hi Steph

Thank you for the reply and advise. On the positive side I always give other people a good laugh with some of the things I do, I,me sure they think I intend to be funny and entertaining, little do they know that its the real thing.

I think I have a lot to learn, as I am not even sure what a hyper and hypo are or what they feel like, could I have been having these? I have never tested but suppose I should so that I can see if these ailments etc are connected to the numbers.

Any way, thanks again and I look forward to joining in all of the chat.

Hello Saskia, welcome to the forum.

I am going to be blunt. Sorry! 😱

I'd recommend that you test your blood glucose only if you're going to do something about controlling your diabetes. There's only one person who can control your diabetes and that is you. If you continue to ignore your condition, it will get progressively worse and your other symptoms will not improve.

On the flip side, if you DO take control, you may be able to start looking forward to feeling much better and even reducing the meds that you are on.

I have managed to lose weight since diagnosis and am currently off all medication (I was on gliclazide and then metformin). So, it can be done.

Finally, diabetes IS a big deal if you don't take it seriously. Despite my progress with dealing with diabetes, I do have peripheral neuropathy (tingling/numb toes). If I ignored my condition for two years, I'd possibly have no toes for them to tingle.

Good luck and please start taking care of yourself.

Andy

Hi Saskia, welcome to the forum.

Hi Saskia, welcome to the forum.

I am guessing you are over 45 as the flushing you describe is classic menopause - interesting at first but soon becomes boring.

If not, then you really should be going to the doc or nurse asking questions. They are used to seeing people who intend to lose weight but are slow getting round to it, they have seen it all so don't not go just because of that.

The someone your husband knows may struggle but not talk about it.

YOu are the important one here and as already said, only you can decide to sort things out. If you can't talk about it at home, come on here and bend our ears.

welcome Saskia i zoomed in on your restless arms and legs. I suffer from Restless Leg Syndrom and i take medication for it, it can also affect the arms.
Maybe some of your symptoms are due to high sugar and/or low sugar i'm not to sure as i have type 1. Hope things get better soon. bye for now sheena

Hi Andy

Thanks for the reply - I can do Blunt, so don't apologise, its not a problem.
Good to hear people can get their acts together. I hope to join them soon.

Hi Marg

thanks for the reply.

I thought i had got past the hot flush stage, I think these are anxiety related. They did seem to stop when I stoped the metformin though, so maybe its that. I intend to start going back to the practice so I will see what they say.

Anyway nice to hear back from lots of different people, so thanks again.
