Relationship to Diabetes
Type 1
Hey!
My name is Ameliah and I'm 18. I've had type 1 for 11 years and am currently using an Accu Check Combo Pump (I'm lucky enough to be treated by the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital which has a big pump centre)

I've been looking for a place to talk to other diabetics for a while, without it seeming too much like a 'club' (because who would really want to be part of that club?! 😛) I've pretty much been through it all these past 11 years - bad control, different insulin regimes, serious illness and depression so I've got a pretty extensive range of experiences under my belt! I'm just looking for people to chat to, because I don't think you can truly understand until you've been there, y'know?

Also, I'm heading off to Uni this September, and if anyone is doing the same or has done in the past, I'd really appreciate some advice from a human perspective, rather than a medical one!

So, chat, I'd love to talk!

Thanks,
Ameliah!

Hi Ameliah, welcome to the forum 🙂 We have a few pumpers on the same pump as you, plus others in the Norwich area, people your age and people heading to Uni! So I'm sure you will find lots of people with plenty in common 🙂 Look forward to hearing more from you.

Hi Ameliah and welcome from another Norwich person, there are a few of us on here.

Did you get your pump before you turned 18? From what I gather the childrens end of the diabetes centre is very proactive when it comes to pumps, unfortunately I'm struggling to persuade them I should have one. I'd be really interested to hear about the process you went through, see if I can pick up any tips! Other than my pump struggles though they are great there!

I'm in the process of starting up a support group in Norwich for 18-30 year olds which you may be interested in? We're called Circle D Norwich, if you're on facebook you should be able to find us on there, or our website is http://sites.google.com/site/circlednorwich/

Where are you planning to go for uni?

Hi Ameliah,

I'm just a year older than you and I've just started pumping. I've also just finished my first year at university so I've got a fair bit of experience under my belt. I was on injections when I first went to university and went onto a pump three months ago. Feel free to ask me anything about university with the D, you can chat to me on Facebook, MSN or on here over PM if you want to ask things in private.

Tom

Hi Ameliah, welcome to the forum :D

Hi Ameliah welcome to the forum!

I'm Shiv, 22, had the d for 19 years now. Starting a pump trial in September which I am ridiculously excited about, and hoping to head to uni in Sept 2011 🙂 feel free to contact me by any means available (er...that would be facebook and MSN 🙂).

The brilliant thing about this forum is that we are all there! We have that mutual understanding. Just to blag it out, we're having a forum meet in Southampton on Sat 7th August and then in Birmingham on Sat 18th September if you could make it to either of those!

Hi Ameliah
