Feeling unsupported - probably because of Covid. Feeling overwhelmed - have the flu and no idea how to manage not feeling well and diabetes. What flu remedies? Which cough sweets? Feeling sorry for myself!
Hi @Nanny - sorry you are feeling grotty with the flu! Hope you will be back to normal soon
I am quite new too and all I got told was to head to this site and read the posts - so glad I did !!
If I had the flu I think I would be taking paracetamols but I am sure someone more experienced will come along and give better advice. I wonder if you get sugar free cough medicine? Surely you should be able to?
Did you get told what your HBA1C result was? This is the blood test that they use to see if you are diabetic. A score of 48 or more means you are diabetic. There are various types of diabetes - and the info varies for each one.
Are you on Metformin, injecting insulin etc? Any info you can give us will help everyone to give you better info. A lot of us add the info into our Signature (click on your nickname at the top of the page and you will see the Signature link).
Keep reading the posts on this forum - the info is fab. You can also do the courses highlighted in orange at the top to increase your knowledge of diabetes.
We are all in this together so ask any questions and you will get lots of useful advice/first hand experience.

Seen the doctor once, for about 5 minutes. Given diagnosis. Given metaformin. Discussed other medical stuff - I suspect I'm physically falling apart.
Metaformin was Hell! Couldn't leave the house - really upset my gut. Given slow release metaformin over phone.
That was nearly 3 months ago. I've lost nearly 2 stone in weight... A few more pounds and I won't be overweight!! I'm miserable on low carb / no sugar diet.
Really miss real food - feel severed from my ethnicity. My kids miss my proper cooking. We were real foodies, but don't know how to cook Chinese food with no rice or noodles (actually no point trying). For the first time I am eating separately - alone.
Got the flu / cold - really sore throat - missing honey and lemon and cough medicine! Missing comfort ill food - Kong Gee (made with loads of white rice)
Sorry to hear you’re feeling rubbish, if you have this heavy cold that is going round it is miserable, I have it at the moment too. I’ve been taking 4 of the lemsip sachets per day (you can’t take more than that as they each have 2 paracetamol in), they’re only 2g sugars each sachet, you could just take paracetamol but I find these help my throat. I’ve also been taking ibuprofen when needed on top to help the aches, and sugar free strepsils or halls lozenges for the throat, then just lots of hot drinks and long hot showers.
If your blood sugars are high, it’s probably the illness rather than the cold medications, I’m struggling to get below 15-20 despite lots of extra insulin, but it’s just something that can happen when you’re ill.
Hallo
I find that gargling pure Tea Tree oil helps to relieve a sore throat and tackles bacteria plus eucalyptus oil like Olbas oil spread on my forehead and nose helps breathing. Avoid the eyes as it stings. You can get olbas oil inhalers now too that you squirt up your nose and ones you can inhale. I also use effervescent paracetamol when the going gets tough. Get well soon.
Hi
Hope you soon feel better. Paracetemol is fine for diabetics.
I love Chinese food, but have rice and noodle substitutes. Cauliflower blitzed and steamed instead of rice, courgetti or boodles instead of noodles. You can get noodles made with beans I believe and even carb free ones. My last Chinese meal was mango chicken, stir fry vegetables with bean sprouts and cashew nuts. In fact I don't feel nearly so bloated and sluggish by cutting down on high carb food. Congratulations on the weight loss too.
Thanks. Blinking cold is stopping me sleeping so I am a big misery.
Have had stomach issues forever - can't take ibuprofen or aspirin. Paracetamol or nothing!!! Resorted to the kids Vick Vaporub. Couldn't get out cos waiting for (now negative) PCR test.
Can't be doing with Cauliflower Rice. Think courgetti is ok... But not with Chinese food. Been trying Konjac noodles in soups - they have NO CALORIES!!! and are very fillling. Also Chinese food uses a lot of cornflour and rice flour - trying to work round that too!!! Had brown rice yesterday, it's ok, but not are joyful as a big bowl of steamed rice. Until my diagnosis I probably are rice 4 out of 5 meals... I suppose that was the problem. I wonder what they do in China???

What they are doing in China is getting Type 2 Diabetes at a rate that even outstrips the USA.
I find Cauli 'rice' is OK with any Chinese food which has a strongly flavoured sauce- so definitely not congee! I also eat it with Thai and Indian foods.
The problem with brown rice is that the fibre only slows down the delivery of the glucose a little - it's exactly the same glucose load you get.
Boodles (butternut squash noodles) and Swoodles (swede noodles) may work well? With cauliflower rice it’s got to be homemade not the packet stuff, just fry in a little oil and it’s fine to have an egg fried in it too.

Never heard of the noodles... Are they Swedes or turnips? England and Scotland do them the other way round from each other.... Are swoodles orange or whitish?
Tried bought and homemade cauliflower rice - it's a hard no from me. Probably cos I ate so much rice before!
Sorry to hear you’ve had a tricky start to your diabetes experience and that it has messed so much with the food you love.
Have you got hold of a BG meter? Just wondering if you had checked your BG response before and after rice? I find basmati generally OK (though I do have insulin to use!). You’ve been losing weight which may have helped your metabolism around food?
It might be that you find an acceptable portion BG-wise is far less than you might have had before, but this might be something you could adjust to over time, if you can add other dishes?
Have you increased proteins and fats as part of your low carb menu? Once you are at a weight you’d like to maintain, this can give you additional flexibility?
Hi.
No meters. No numbers. No advice. Told I had diabetes. Given metaformin. Told to find out on the internet. That was 3 months ago.
I am not eating any refined sugar. I don't have a sweet tooth, so that's not that hard. I have, mostly, cut out carbs - no rice, no potatoes, bread, pasta, cereal... Eating a massive amount of beans, veggies and some meat/fish. I just can't Chinese it!!! I don't actually know whats in half the Chinese stuff I use - but can't get round rice, noodles and flour. So for the time being - no Chinese.
I'm interested in the basmati rice stuff - as that's my rice of choice.
Information is all about Chinese take out / restaurant food. That's not the same as home Chinese food - or the stuff I know at least. It's very narrow in its view of Chinese food.
Really just quite frustrated - have a bad cold and fed up - wanting comfort food. Diabetes was not the reason I went to the doctor - so other medical stuff happening - feeling like my body has just stopped working.
@Nanny I found this online, although it is from Canada, it addresses home cooking. Again: try it, check it for spikes. I hope it helps you if only in a small way. HERE
