Hi Everyone,

I've just been diagnosed this morning Type 2 along with low iron and an infection somewhere but they don't know where  So feeling a bit sorry for myself (not like me at all) and lost. No meds prescribed yet but I have an appointment to see the nurse in 3 weeks time to discuss diet etc, however I want to start to try and control as much as I can now rather than eat the wrong things for another few weeks and be in a worse state. I don't know what my reading is, I didn't ask as I think I was just a bit stunned with it all. Would people advise me to get a monitor?

Anyway just wanted to say hi and am sure I will find out what I want to know on here 🙂

Welcome to the group, Susan, you will find a wealth of information on this forum.

To answer your question, yes I would get a meter, this way you will be able to learn what affects your BG & what doesn't, people recommend the SD Codefree from Amazon as being the most affordable self-funded option.

As for what to eat, I would suggest cutting or reducing carb sources like bread, rice, pasta, cereals & starchy vegetables, replacing them with green leafy vegetables instead.

Thanks Martin. Yes it makes sense to know what affect my BG so will get one of the meters. I have a lot of reading to do and probably a load more questions to ask lol,

Sounds the right way to me Susan 73. Avoid sweet stuff & keep active, walks after tea etc. Good luck 🙂

Welcome Susan. Don't be afraid of questions. Ask and someone here will be able to give a suggestion or answer to most issues we have. We share our experiences for the forester benefit. Testing and getting to know what works (and doesn't ) for you is the most important thing you can do to help yourself

Hi Susan73...there is a lot to take in...in a similar position to you when diagnosed couple of months ago...I would recommend a fantastic book...The first Year Type 2 Diabetes by Gretchen Becker..it will answer a lot of your questions...explain exactly what type 2 diabetes...taught me a lot...and of course this forum has been a great source of support and information...as for testing...yes...yes...yes...again another valuable learning tool...GP and Nurse told me not to test...I ignored their advice...been testing regularly...tells me what effect the food I am eating has on my BG...what I can tolerate...what spikes my BG...I was stunned initially...shocked...however I seem to be managing my diabetes...I make the odd mistake...but getting there...good luck...

Thank you for recommending the book. It makes sense to me to test too.

I don't know if you have heard of a Freestyle Libre. A fantastic tester. A reader & two sensors for £130. The sensors last for 2weeks each & fit on your arm. It reads your bg for 24hrs for 2weeks. Gives a graph of results.

Welcome to the forum.

Yes, absolutely get a machine so you can test. It really helps with knowing what your levels are doing alongside diet etc.

You'll have ups and downs and frustrations, but you're in the right place over here, everyone is great and you'll find folk with a wealth of experience and knowledge.

Welcome from a fellow T2.

Thank you all for the lovely welcome. Machine, strips and book all ordered 🙂.
