Hi everyone, I have been diagnosed type 2 for about 3 years, Really miss my coffee in the morning. My question is can I have coffee with sweeteners instead of sugar?

Hi jak34 and welcome to forum

Hi Carolg and thanks. I have been reading for a while and thought it was time to join and get some help.

Even when you don't ask, there's great advice given to others that give you an "ah ha" moment.i drink coffee with sk milk, but don't know if it affects bg levels

Had 1 this morning with 1 sugar and my BG went to 12.2! Don't think I will do it again lol

Don't know how I could start the day without a large black coffee with 3 sweetners! Does not seem to have done me any harm - yet!!

Hi Jak, welcome to the forum 🙂 Coffee with sweeteners should be fine - it's carbohydrates you need to be careful of, particularly in the mornings when most people are quite insulin-resistant. Are you on any medication for your diabetes?

Will try sweeteners in the morning then, Is any sweetener good or are there specific ones for diabetes?

Yes i'm on Metmorfin 3 times a day...gliclazide 2 a day....Sitagliptin 1 a day

Regarding type of sweetener it is really a matter of personal taste. I use the tubs from Savers shop as they are the cheapest around. OH hates Canderel but I really can't tell the difference.

Welcome to the forum Jak and to everyone else who has joined recently. Lots of friendly support and advice on here. 🙂

Thanks for welcome Matt. I think this forum is great and i'm enjoying reading it 🙂

Well the sweeteners won't increase your BG - but strong coffee sometimes does.

I am a bit gobsmacked as to why you ever thought you couldn't have it - or anything else for that matter - with them in?

Hi and welcome to the forum Jak - I hope it is ok to drink coffee with sweeteners - I do it several times a day!!😱:D

Haven't really found anything out since i was diagnosed. Buried my head in sand until i watched something the other day where a young lad went blind because he didn't take his meds because of side affects. :(

Welcome, fellow T2 who's 15 months in and doesn't know anything either.
Some people had a real downer on sweetners. Say they are dreadful things.
Now, what's this about coffee?

Hi Ralph, I've read a bit about aspartame being bad but i enjoyed the coffee too much to care :D

OK, I'd suggest having a read of the following: Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter - these should help you understand things better. I'd also recommend getting a copy of Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker, then you should be better equipped to deal with things. Unfortunately, it's often the case that people get very little useful information when they are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, so you're not alone! Please let us know if you have any questions, and please do read the links I suggested 🙂

Sweeteners can be a problem in large doses because they often have an unfortunate effect on the plumbing, but it would have to be a huge amount. One or two in a cup of coffee isn't going to do any harm. I use either Candarel or Stevia in mine and I've replaced milk (lactose = sugar) with unsweetened almond milk because it's much nicer than soya milk (yuck!)
