Hi everyone, im after some advise. My GP has put me on gliclazide and im scared im going to gain weight. what can i do to avoid this as ive lost 4 st another 4 to go so how can i avoid the weight gain? or will it happen regardless?
thank you
Hi @warnawoo and welcome to the forum - Gliclazide is a drug that increases your insulin production, and sometimes it is reported as a factor in weight gain - that said, from what I've heard on here it seems to be very rare - as long as you keep to a healthy balanced diet and keep doing what you are doing (4st weight loss is fantastic) you'll hopefully be ok
Hi @warnawoo and welcome to the forum.
I am also on Gliclazide, primarily to get my previously very high blood glucose levels down. I have gained a little weight but this was intentional.
Because Gliclazide increases your insulin production you need to eat enough carbs to stop potential hypos. Having said that, if your current diet plan is working for you there is no reason to change it unless it is very low carb. You should have been prescribed a BG monitor so you can check your bg levels.
Good luck with your continuing weight loss and managing your diabetes. Remember it is a marathon not a sprint.
Hopefully you’ll not get any weight gain with the Gliclazide. Glic will increase insulin production, but my experience is that insulin in and of itself does not result in weight gain. I’ve only gained weight on insulin when I've been eating more than my body needed.
Insulin helps the body process the glucose from digested carbohydrates. So theoretically if that glucose has been previously stuck in the bloodstream causing havoc, it may be available to get into cells (or be stored), but you should only gain weight if you have excess energy from your menu.
