Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello everyone, I'm a type 2 diabetic, have been for 4 years, thought it would come along as my dad and Grandad were similar. Thought it would be best to get it under control in the early days, to avoide some of the complications (I hope).
I have got my fasting blood glucouse down from 12 to just under 7, have cut out sugar as much as possible, but have a savoury tooth rather than a sweet one so not hard.
Do many people buy the special sugar free chocolate, cakes, cereals ? they seem quite expensive, I generally get mine for xmas or birthdays.
Cheers
Ian

Hi Ian, and welcome!

I was told by the diabetes nurses not to buy the sugar free stuff as they still contain carbs, so therefore still affect your blood sugar. Also, the artificial sweeteners can contain polyols which can cause 'upset tummies', if you get what I mean!

Look for the carbohydrate values per 100 gm to compare the 'sugar free' and 'ordinary' foods.

as the 'diabetic' chocolate and sweets will usually contain similar amounts of calories, fat etc as the regular stuff it's usually advised that you're better having a small, occasional amount of the real stuff. I'm not sure though if the advice would differ for diet controlled though.....?

I don't use the sugar free things, I eat normal chocolate, cakes etc.
Don't forget that although sugar and sweet things push your blood sugars up, so do those savoury carbs in rice, bread, pasta etc.

sounds like you have done well to get your numbers down to below 7, keep it up!

Everything in moderation when diet/exercise controlled. My DN told me not to bother buying any specialist diabetic foods too - I've never eaten cake really but I do allow myself the odd bar of real chocolate - and I have to say my HbA1c has still come down slightly! (Makes me wonder what could have happened if I had tried a bit harder....)

hi 🙂

i have sugar free drinks but only because i actually hate the taste of sugary drinks (dont have sugar in my tea or coffee) and not due to my diabetes. also diabetic chocolate tastes foul so just have the real stuff and in moderation and keep an eye on the levels after it 🙂

Hello and welcome

I too am T2 and have been for 7 years or so

As most people have already said the 'diabetic' foods are too expensive and the chocs, even after just 2, give me the trots (sorry).

Nice to see another T2 on this site

Cheers,
Hazel
