Hi

I'm Mike and was Diagnosed on Tuesday as type 2. Spent all of Tuesday bouncing around docs and hospital and Tuesday night in hospital.

Still a little freaked out about it all but slowly accepting it in my had and that i will have to make some major changes to my lifestyle. getting a bit worried because when i was discharge i was put on Metformin by the Doc's and told that the Diabetes team would get in touch but still not hear anything from them, is this usual?

Thanks

Mike

It can take a few weeks, so don't panic. If you haven't heard anything in a fortnight, call the surgery for an update. In the meantime, this place is a mine of information to help you find your way through the maze that is this disease.

Hi mike and welcome to the forum i have been type 2 since feb 09, and preety much told the same as you given a few leaflets and left to it, im only one case but for me it took an age before i seen a diabetic nurse, but i guess if you have not heard maybe say 2 weeks then maybe give your surgery a ring, its no good just leaving someone to it your naturally wondering and more then likely have a head full of questions you need answering.

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum🙂 My experience was different from yours as I was in hospital for over a week and got immediate contact on discharge. People's experiences vary greatly, so what you need to do is make sure you are proactive in getting the care you need. If you do not hear anything in the next week, start making phone calls to find out what you can expect and when it will happen.

HI Mike,

Welcome to the best fountains of diabetes knowledge I have come across. Until you hear from your care team if there are any questions you have feel free to ask, we are bound to find an answer here somewhere xx Lou xx

Hi Mike and welcome. I can only echo what everyone else has already said. My team took a while too - so much so that I went back to see the practice nurse after about 2 weeks just to ask if I was on the right track! Anything you wanna know - just ask.

hi Mike welcome to the forum ...its all abit strange at first the Diabetes stuff but try not to worry too much you've found a good forum here 🙂

Hi Mike, welcome to the forum.

Hi all

Thanks for all the kind words and the information you have all given. I have been having a good trawl of the internet and getting lots of info and intend to have a good nosey through here as well. I have had a call for the GP's and will be going on Thursday so that's great news. Think I am getting my head round it and ready to get a meter and work out what's good for me and what's not.
Am I sad I started build a spreadsheet last night for counting carbs.

Well thanks again for the support and i'm sure you will be seeing more of me around.

Mike

Let us know how you get on Mike. I don't think it's sad building a spreadsheet - forewarned is forearmed as they say - it's good to try and work out what works for you and makes it so much easier when you know what does.

Hi Mike welcome to the forum. I don't think it's sad you've made a spreadsheet for counting carbs it shows how seriously you are already taking it, I went into denial for quite a while after diagnosis. Good luck with the appointment thursday and let us know how you got on.

How it went

Well that was a blur....
Got to see a really nice Lady how told me what my last HB2 thingy was. 9.5% guessing a bit high from what i have read. got a load more information to read and told get ready to rattle as i was prescribe 3 more pills to take.

she was not going to give me a meter to start of with but after a short discussion decided i could but that i was not to test more than 4 times a week due to how much is spent on the test strips.

sounds like it will be getting an eye examination though and a visit to the dietitian.

I would guess that this is all normal.

well im of to read through the myriad of info and start the pill popping 🙂

hi yes all sounds exactly the same as what i went through, you should here from the retinopathy people about your eyes and as for testing some on here have had to fight for the right to test so im pleased at least your getting a meter.Hba1c should ideally be around 6.5% but any reduction is good, do you know when you will be having another hbA1c?

oh and forgot to say Jen my other half (ball and chain, pain in the neck (her words not mine i would never say such things about such a wonderful caring "mad" lady) came with me sooo glad for her support 🙂

Hi Mike

It's good to have some moral support with you at these appointments my husband always comes with me to mine. Glad you got given a meter to test with as well most type 2's have to fight to get one or end up buying them themselves. Hope that the extra pills do the trick.

Hi Mike,

I was diagnosed in October 2009. I made immediate changes to my lifestyle and have now lost nearly 30lbs in weight. Because of that, my diabetic symptoms have been brought under control and I'm now off all meds (I was on gliclazide and then metformin).

I also set up loads of spreadsheets! At first I just recorded what I ate (just for a couple of months while I got to grips with what worked for me). Now I just run a weight loss spreadsheet (tells me what date I'm likely to hit my target weight based on current progress!).

Anyway, I hope everything goes well for you too!

Andy 🙂

p.s. You're already ahead of me in one respect, my HbA1c was 13.3 at diagnosis!
