Hi I am new to all this. My 3 year old was diagnosed with Type 1 in February of this year, its been hard espcially for his older brother and younger sister, but I am very lucky to have excellent support. He is on Novorapid and Levemir. We have had a lot of highs over these last few weeks which we are trying to sort. He has been very up and down with his moods, has anybody else experencied this with their child.

I have read alot about the pump but was wondering how is it decided that you go onto it, and what r the advantages and disadvantages.

Sorry for all the questions but I am still learning.

Hi Liz, welcome to the forum 🙂 Glad to hear that you have good support for your son - there are lots of parents here that will give you lots more (along with the rest of us!). I'm sure that they can answer your questions about pumping for children better than I can.

Hi Liz welcome to the forum 🙂 sorry you have to be here though. I'm Shiv, I'm 22 and have had type 1 for almost 20 years.

Have you joined the Children With Diabetes UK emailing list? You can sign up here:

http://www.childrenwithdiabetes.com/uk/ -- there are loads and loads of parents who email on a daily basis offering advice and asking their own questions. Definitely somewhere I would recommend for any parent of a child with d.

If you are interested in a pump for your little one, the best people to speak to are your DSN and your consultant to request one.

No question is too silly so ask away!

Hi and a warm welcome to the forum, have a look through the parents section , the parents in here are absolute credits and anything you need help with in here you will get x

Hi and welcome to the forum although sorry you have to be here.

If you want a pump then there are a few guidelines that must be met. The fact that your child is under 5 will help a lot. If the hba1c is over 8.5%. If the child has a needle phobia. If there are lots of disabling hypo's. If the Consultant feels that you would gain better control on the pump (this normally applies to everyone as the pump is a much more efficient way of delivering insulin to a child as its much more accurate). If your child is insulin sensitive the pump is the answer as it can deliver 1/40th of a unit as opposed to half a unit on injections. The pump also helps brilliantly with Dawn Phenomenon. Like Shiv has mentioned - you will get lots more detailed advice from the other email list as its full of parents who have children on various regimens and they are all very knowledgable and incredibly friendly and helpful.🙂Bev

Thank you for the welcome. I have been onto the other site and joined.
