Hi guys/gals
Just found out that I have type 2 diabetes and need some advice on what is high for Blood sugar levels - it's been about a week and i have been on metformin and Gliclazide, 1 mfm at breakfast and dinner, 40g gzide the same.

My BSL seem to always be between 7-9 when i wake up, before meals and after meals - is this normal? Is it dangerous, i see some people with much higher!

Much appreciated

Hi saladoor, welcome to the forum 🙂 The ideal waking and pre-meal levels are between 4 and 7 mmol/l, with a level of less than 9 mmol/l 2 hours after meals. However, as you are only just a week in you shouldn't feel as though you ought to be getting levels like this currently - it will take a little while for the medication and any adaptations to your diet and activity levels to kick in properly. How did you come to be diagnosed?

I would suggest having a look at our Useful links thread, in particular at Jennifer's Advice and Maggie Davey's letter, and also the highly recommended book Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker. These should give you a good start in understanding how to manage your blood sugar levels well 🙂

Please feel free to ask any questions you may have - lots of friendly people here will be happy to help out! 🙂

Hi Northerner
I was feeling really thirsty and started to get up during the night to go to the loo like every hour, i put it down to Christmas over-indulgence 😱, but then when I came back to work after the festive period i noticed that my eye sight wasn't what it should be and went to the opticians. Sure enough my prescription had changed so he gave me new glasses and suggested i went to speak to the doctor about diabetes.

Went to the docs, had two fasting tests and was sent to the diabetic clinic last week

The strange thing is, my eye sight has gone back to normal and more, to the point where i don't need to wear my glasses at all! I'm not expecting this new found miracle to last forever though and do have glasses on stand by :D

I'm trying to learn as much as I possibly can...

If the optician suspected diabetes then he shouldn't have sold you new glasses. As you have discovered, vision is usually restored once you start tackling the cause. Higher than normal blood sugar levels distort the lenses of the eyes, so when you start reducing them then they go back to normal!

There's a lot to take in, but it sounds like you are making a good start. Don't let things overwhelm you, it's a marathon not a sprint! 🙂

😱😱😱😱

Diabolical behaviour by optician. Fair enough if they hadn't considered diabetes, but given that they actually mentioned it ......!

Meanwhile, welcome to the forum.

Andy
