Hi need advice worried mummy....

Hi my 10 year son has had a very bad week. On Sunday he became urinary incontinent..completely out of the blue. He has since then been wearing pull ups which he's soaking through. He doesn't seem to have any or very little bladder control. He's incredibly thirsty. I took him to the Dr on Monday morning and he tested his urine, which was clear!

He stopped a medication which he'd started recently just in case this was a side effect but with no effect. I took him back to the GP today as I'm really worried. His urine was clear but he also did a finger prick test which was 13.5. The Dr said this was high but not dramatically and believed that if it was diabetes and he was experiencing such bad symptoms it would show up in his Urine hes booked into the surgery for a fasting blood test tomorrow morning. He also checked him for any neurological reasons for this to be happening but felt there wasn't.

I just feel so sad for him and frustrated as you don't want anything to happen to your children. Any advice would be appreciated. Also my son suffers from CSID a very rare genetic auto immune disease . So has a very reduced sugar diet.

Welcome Katcol. That blood test seems high to me. Had he eaten anything in the hour before ? If it was me I think I would be off to A&E & get it checked but other things can come into the picture. Good luck

Hi katcol, welcome to the forum. Very sorry to hear about the problems your son is experiencing It's very unusual for the high levels not to show up in the urine, but 13.5 is high - as has been suggested this may be partly due to when and what he last ate, although if he is on a low sugar diet then this is also unlikely to be a big contributor. Please let us know how the tests go. Diabetes is a complex condition, but it is possible to manage it well, and medication and technology to control it has never been better, so if he does get a diagnosis it doesn't have to stand in his way of achieving anything he sets his mind to.

Please take him straight to A&E. Urine tests are NOT always conclusive, however a blood glucose of 13.5 should trigger an immediate referral to a paediatric diabetes unit. Please don't wait while your GP drags his heels - I don't want to be alarmist but undiagnosed type 1 children can deteriorate VERY quickly into a life threatening condition. Please go to hospital straight away.

How did this morning's fasting blood glucose test go? Did the nurse / doctor / phlebotomist do a finger prick test as well as take blood for lab testing?

Welcome Katcol, sounds like a very worrying time for you and your son. Have you had any further clarification? I would suggest, like others, that 13.5 is high, especially if your son is already on a low sugar diet, so may not have eaten anything that would push his bs up. Hello there, sorry you are having such a worrying time but I agree with what the others have said, please get it properly checked immediately! 13.5 is very high for someone who isn't known to be diabetic, and the thirst and weeing are classic symptoms. If you've had the fasting test today make sure you get the result as soon as possible (keep hassling if you have to) or go straight to A&E. Unfortunately many GPs seem to make the mistake of sending anyone suspected of diabetes for a fasting test, which is correct for diagnosing type 2 in adults but not type 1 in children - as Redkite said, your doctor should have referred you to a specialist paediatric diabetes team as soon as you got that 13.5.

And don't get me started on urine strips!! When my daughter was diagnosed, I had suspected for a few weeks that something was wrong but wasn't sure if I was being a neurotic mum. When I finally took her to the GP he did a urine test which he said was normal. He didn't do a fingerprick test at all, just referred her for fasting blood test (unfortunately at the time I didn't know enough about it to argue). Just 6 days later the fasting test had come back at 18, fingerprick test was off the scale (+33) and urine now full of sugar and ketones. She was going into DKA and was fading fast, if we'd waited one day longer she would have been in a coma. Laboratory blood sugar test came back at 46!

I've not heard of D making even children incontinent though. Certainly doesn't do that to adults. I did once HAVE to wet myself because my bladder was so full and no loo anywhere I could get to - but I was still able to choose where I did it. (And never walked past that gatepost again without shuddering)

So - is that common?

I would imagine that since bedwetting is certainly possible, it's not outside the range of possibility if the bladder is primed

Yes, bed wetting in a child who was previously dry at night is an absolutely classic symptom of undiagnosed diabetes. My son was 4 at diagnosis and had been more or less dry at night by then. He went on to have accidents at night for several more years whenever he'd had a run of high BGs.

Our daughter was newly diagnosed with Type 1 3 weeks ago and she started wetting the bed because she wanted to wee so much. I'm not saying it is Type 1 that your Son has but it is one of the signs. Freya had an "off the scale" blood sugar reading and 7.1 ketones in her wee when tested at the doctors. As your post was from 4th November I am assuming you have your test results and would hope everything is ok?! Good Luck anyway, let us know how he went on x
