At risk of diabetes
Hi everyone
I'm new to using the boards. I'm at risk of having diabetes, both my late parents had type 2 diabetes after the age of 50. I'm 55 and to be honest obese. Last September I had major surgery which left me with a scar that wouldn't heal properly. I was tested for diabetes. I was found to be at risk but I was also protein deficient and animic. After a change in diet 5 months on it is healing lovely but I feel I need to tackle my at risk diagnosis now.
Thank you to everyone who takes the time to read my post. I look forward to reading any tips and advice. Xx

Hi @Balisa and welcome to the forum. If you recognise that you need to lose some weight then you have probably taken the first step to getting things under control. Read around the forum for tips and ideas and ask questions. There is a lot of experience here to tap into.

Welcome to the forum @Balisa

Good to hear your change in diet helped your healing. What changes did you make?

If you have anaemia, that may affect the reliability of the check they usually use to monitor and diagnose diabetes, which is called an HbA1c (the Hb stands for haemoglobin, the red blood cells of which you have a deficiency). Sometimes an alternative measure called Fructosamine is used instead.

Have a look around the forum and ask away with any questions you may have - nothing will be considered too obvious or ‘silly’.

You might also want to register for the Learning Zone, the orange tab at the top of the page, which has loads of helpful content and learning resources.

Good luck, and keep us posted 🙂

Thank you Everydayupsanddowns, to be honest my diet was awful. I was living on pies and pasties, chocolate , crisps and cakes. I was in a bad place emotionally and my diet payed the price. Wow feels odd as i have never admired it until now. I have now rationed the rubbish food as i call it to, dark chocolate bar once a week and cake (small slice) on a special occasion. I stick to chicken ,Turkey or fish with salads or veg. I do have a measured amount of low fat dairy, I now look at the sugars in yoghurt and ready meals. With the ok from my health care providers, I have started walking the dog. Those are the changes i have made for the better. Thank you again for posting on my thread.
