HI, I have been type 1 since 1966 as a lad just left school an started my first job looking to start my apprenticeship as a metalworker , I unfortunately I caught a flu virus and then later after suffering a mis diagnosis finally being admitted to hospital and then recovering on Insulin and diet , I am retired now I spent my last years employed in the Glasgow shipyards helping to build ships for the Royal Navy , now well I spend most of my time at my allotment or fishing keeping fit.

Hi I just joined yesterday and have been type 1 for 57 years now , I am waiting to see my doctor at the hospital in February my next appointment asking him if I qualify for a closed loop system as I have used multiple injections for at last 15 to 20 years now.

Let us know what your doctor says about your eligibility for a closed loop system! Hope the appointment goes well 🙂

Hi , Maria thank you for your reply, I guess I will need to be patient until February when my Hospital appointment is , I was offered the insulin pump many years ago when I was still working but turned it down I didn't fancy taking 6 or more blood tests a day and the type of work it could have got damaged, but now I will certainly enquire as of speaking to 2 people who have the closed loop system which means no more injections it sounds like a great advancement , I might be offered something different but if you don't ask you don't get .

The expectation is that over the next few years (by 2027 ish) we'll all be offered a closed loop system and it'll be part of the standard care. (Not compulsory, but available for people who want it.)

Hi Bruce, Yes I have been checking my last Balance magazine and I noticed that was mentioned ,here's hoping the NHS can stand the expenditure.

I know this is the expectation based on the NICE update due imminently but I thought that was for England only.
I find it confusing and unnecessary that the different countries have different recommendations but it is what it is.

I wonder how many people are offered closed loop without "basic" pumping.
I would be concerned about relying 100% on the technology without understanding what to do when the technology fails. If someone started on closed loop, would they have the habitualised knowledge to use a pump without a CGM?

Yes, only for England.

I'm pretty sure they're making sure people have at least some experience in manual pump use (and what to do when things go wrong), and (for people going pretty much straight onto HCL from diagnosis) that they have some experience of MDI so can cope on that. I agree it wouldn't be wise for anyone to be stuck with a broken HCL with no understanding of operating the pump manually.

Perhaps they do things manually for X amount of time before switching to looping? I was offered a loop but I was already pumping.

Welcome to the forum @Tradesman

We’ve a few forum member who have been through the 5-decades barrier (and some a little longer than that). There have been lots of changes even in my 30-odd years - and the pace of change seems only to be increasing!

Do you think it would help you to start on a non-sensor-augmented pump first, before adding the connection between pump and sensor? Or would you prefer to leap straight in at the deep end?

Hi there, I was offered the pump several years ago before the sensors were available, but I decided I was still working and wearing this device would have been difficult not bumping it as I was climbing through bulkheads and generally working machinery etc, but I believe if offered the pump only I would accept it and maybe progress later to the full closed loop system, I suppose that idea learning the operating of the pump etc beforehand would be sensible, so I wait patiently until February and just to add this is the third appointment as they cancelled the first two and moved it on and I am sure your well aware that covid has caused many problems for the NHS who I have always been grateful for their help and support.

Hi Mike I would like to add I was given the Freestyle libre 1 about 4 years ago and use the Freestyle libre 2 now I use Humalog and Lantus Insulin 4 shots per day and 125 mg Levothyroxine and now recently 8mg Candesartan for blood pressure.

Ah that’s a shame, and must be frustrating for you :(

My ‘summer’ pump clinic appointment hasn’t come through yet either.

Hi Mike , I guess if your clinic is anything like mine when covid started it disrupted appointments so much here I had one appointment at the hospital and one at my local surgery clinic per year but localy I wasn't contacted again for nearly 4 years, I had to make the next contact, I was keeping really well over many years so I was given the maximum 1 year between appointments at the hospital.
