Hi. I've just been recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes (beginning of November). I'm on Metformin - the prolonged release ones as the normal ones had a very nasty effect on my innards! I was also put onto Statins yesteday. Just beginning to get used to the idea of being diabetic and finding my way through all the stuff I need to take on board. I've just applied to do an online Desmond Course. I may be asking some very silly questions but I'm like a baby taking their first steps and only have a general idea about the condition.

Hi, sorry you've had to join us but welcome. Actually we don't consider any questions posted here to be silly so please feel free to ask whatever you want. What have you been told so far about dietary changes etc?

Not alot! Been a bit confused as I've seen two different Diabetic Nurses who said different things about blood tests. One said I needed to book for one at the start of Feb and the other said I needed one now@. Fortunately I saw the GP yesterday and she cleared up the confusion. But besides that I've been told very little - just make changes in my diet and exercise, but all very general stuff. I've found out a lot from the Diabetes UK Website which is where I found out about the Desmond courses

And welcome to the forum from me as well, ask away silly or otherwise... 🙂

Welcome to the forum. Yes it is not uncommon or people to suffer side effects of metformin but slow release is generally better and has less impact if taken with food, some people find mid meal helps.
Were you told the result of your HbA1C test as that will indicate your starting point and how much work you will need to do.
Many find a low carbohydrate approach is successful and this link may help you with some ideas for that. It is based on the suggested no more than 130g carbs not just sugar per day and was developed by a GP surgery who found the standard NHS advise did their patients no favours being too high in carbs for many to tolerate. https://lowcarbfreshwell.com/
I did the on-line DESMOND course and I'm afraid it was based on that standard NHS approach but you may still find it useful.
If you reduce your carbs then that can have a beneficial effect on cholesterol levels anyway.

Thank you that looks a handy site! My HbA1C i beleive is/was 95 so I've a long way to go! I thought it might be useful to do DESMOND to give me a starting point. At this point any information I can dig up will be useful!

Hello @Sally C and welcome to the forum
Some of us had little or no information from the doctors when diagnosed so asking questions is what this forum is all about. I had only the most basic knowledge about living with diabetes when I was diagnosed earlier this year. I found a great deal of information and support on the forum from people who collectively have decades of experience.

Hi sally

Imrecently diagnosed and am doing Desmond....done most of it just the occasional updates to keep on top of

The basics is eat less move about more

My approach has been moderation.......you will find people will try and push diets on to you or tell you dont eat that.....or that....and especially not that.......i dont respond well to that so doing it my way and have just cut down drastically on stuff but not cut things out entirely......cut down carbs and fat and salt and sugar....im now finding recipes i can do thay appeal so still enjoying food.....just different food

Good luck in your journey

@paultrose - your approach is in factmore or less what the 'Freshwell' site advocates! - so who knows you might find some additional new recipes and/or suggestions that appeal to you on it! Also some proper explanations about diabetes stuff anyway.

When diagnosed I had a HbA1c of 91, 8 years ago.
I had been encouraged to eat all sorts of healthy carbs and cut right back of fats.
After years of the same advice I was almost spherical but kept soldiering on.
As I always felt we doing Atkins I went back to eating no more than 50 gm of carbs a day, with meat, fish, eggs cheese, and the fat which came with them. Back to a HbA1c of 41 in 6 months.
I did cut back a bit more on the carbs, but no effect at all, but in remission for years now, no problems.
I did try the shakes low calorie diet recently - that did not go well, so it is back to having steak for breakfast.

Welcome to the forum @Sally C

Glad you have found us!

Ask away with all your questions - we win’t consider any of them silly at all!

We have a lot of members who have been diagnosed with an HbA1c around where your was, or even higher, who have been able to make positive changes to steer their BG levels back towards the recommended range.

There’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach that works (or appeals!) to everyone, and having the experiences of lots of different forum members can be really helpful in finding a range of different options and approaches you can try 🙂

Good luck, and let us know how you get on 🙂
