I'm pleased to have found this forum. Diagnosed last year Sept in pre-op tests for surgery (Bye 1 get 1 free). Father & Uncle have type 2 so a strong family history. Not overweight & quite active; no symptoms.

Looking forward to increasing info & knowledge on Type 2 & hopefully give some support when I get to grips with the site.

I do have a question regarding blood suger levels. My target has been set as 7; after upping my exercise it had reduced to 5.8 does 7 seem a little high? My metformin has been reduced by half so delighted. Now on 2 500g tabs per day.

Take care

Hi SimplesL, welcome to the forum 🙂 Normally you are set an upper and lower target, plus a post-meal target. Normally this would be between 4-7 before meals and not greater than 8.5 two hours after eating, but your team will tailor your personal targets to your personal circumstances - it can be very difficult sometimes to achieve 'ideal' targets when you are relatively newly-diagnosed. When do you take your readings? 5.8 is very good for a waking or pre-meal number, and especially good for a post-meal number! Great that you have been able to reduce your meds!

I'd suggest having a look at the Useful links thread for links to some good reading material. Please ask if there is anything we can help you with, we have lots of friendly, experienced and knowledgeable people here who have probably been through the same thing ans with similar questions - so ask away! 🙂

Hi Simples and a warm welcome to the forum

Thanks for the info. I only have the HBA1c test done every 6 months & don't have a lower/upper target as far as I know. Never tested before/after a meal I was told I didn't need to self-test & having checked the NICE guidlines this seems correct.

First fingerprick test was 12.3 & on day of my op was 13.4 (pretty stressed; surgery for early breast cancer; treatment for this all done & now being monitored).

Checked again in Nov last year then it was 8.3. Due to cancer treatment they left me on 2 500g metformin. In March level 7.2 so put me up to 4 500g metformin. I was now in position to take more control as radiotherpay completed & able to get back to exercise I did prior to cancer & increased a lot to get to the recommended amounts. Now 5.8 & delighted; metformin now back to 2 500g tabs. Diabetic nurse has also said if check in 6 months shows still good she will probably reduce metformin to 1 tab a day.

Father has CKD & unfortunatley it is looking like he is facing dialysis in next 6 to 12 months. Hoping by taking steps now to keep everything as normal as possible I will be able to avoid this when I'm older. (He is 75, was diagnosed about the same age as me 52)

I was thinking of buying a meter to check before/after meal myself just so I know.

Welcome to the forums SimplesL 🙂

Ah, thank you - things are a little clearer 🙂 An HbA1c of 5.8 is very good indeed. Most of the Type 2s here would recommend testing so that you can determine how different meals affect your levels, but from your progress it would appear that you have achieved good control without it. It can be very useful to know if there are any particular 'healthy' foods that actually raise your blood sugar levels quickly - many people are surprised by some things and are then able to modify their diets to exclude those things that have a bad effect. A 6-monthly test cannot provide you with this sort of information, as it is a sort of 'average' of your levels over the previous 6-12 weeks.

Don't buy a meter! You can get one free from Abbott at http://www.abbottdiabetescare.co.uk/free-meter-signup 🙂

Hi Simples,

Welcome to the forum, I am also Type 2 recently diagnosed. Well done on your reading.
