Hi I am Malcolm type 2 and deteriorating
Hi I was diagnosed in about 2000 and have been fairly well controlled with Metformin and Gliclazide. After last Christmas I started to deteriorate and was put on Humulin I insulin which has worked very well until about a month ago. After speaking to my diabetes nurse on friday she has put me onto Humalog insulin which I am hoping to pick up fron the chemist in about 1/2 hours time. hopefully this will sort me out for now.
I hope the Humalog works well for you 🙂 Has the nurse discussed dosages with you, and how to adjust them?
Unfortunately the chemist didnt have any in stock this afternoon. So I will be picking it up first thing in the morning. The nurse told me to start with 3 units befor my main meal and see if this is enough. At present I take 1000 metformin slow release twice a day and 2X80 mg gliclazide twice a day and 18 units Humalin I before my breakfast, and this is still not keeping my levels down. She didn't tell me about adjusting my dose.
Thanks Malcolm
It's usually the case that they start you off cautiously with fixed doses when you start on a fast-acting insulin like humalog, in order to gather some information about how much you might need without placing you at risk of a low blood sugar. Eventually, you should be able to tailor your dose so that it matches the amount of carbohydrate in the food you are about to eat - this is known as 'carb counting' - have a look at the following to understand more about what this entails:

If you have any questions, let us know, and good luck tomorrow! 🙂
Thanks Northerner followed the link downloaded the pdf and got it printed out this morning. Haven't read all of it yet but it certainly makes for interesting reading, will it all apply to me being T2 ?
Will finish reading it this afternoon and have my first dose with my evening meal. Yes the chemist did have it in this morning.
