Hi. Been ignoring my type 2 for the last year. Tried hard year 1 with lifestyle changes (sept 2020 diagnosis!) But has caught up with me and started Metformin this week. Need to lose a serious amount of weight and get active again. Harder in 60s than in 20s! Metformin side effects may help

What lifestyle changes did you try as dietary changes are equally if not more important that metformin.
Many find a low carb approach successful in both losing weight and reducing blood glucose and some of the ideas in this link may help you with that. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
Other people find low calorie or a shakes-based regime can give a kick start but whatever you choose has to be enjoyable otherwise it will not be sustainable long term.
Keeping a food diary estimating the amount of carbs you are having will help you see how far away you are from the suggested no more than 130g per day if doing low carb, however if you are already having that sort of amount you may need to reduce it.

Hi. A lifetime Weight watchers member ho hum. I mainly eat healthy meals but am not good with temptation and once I start I struggle to stop. So one chocolate bar becomes 2 etc. After diagnosis I reduced carbs, did the tracking so modified the rest of my diet & lost a stone and lowered my HbA1c from 51 to 48. Then lost it and put the weight back on & stuck my head in the sand. Currently 20st, arthritic knees and in a mess. And HbA1c back to 55. Started meds Thursday week. Going low carb again but so many recipes use fats to improve palatability. Triglycerides are a bit up but cholesterol ok. Fed up.

Hi. Hope I will. Was going through the whole anger/grief/denial thing. Lost Dad to complications related to his diabetes year before I was diagnosed , 5 years after his lower leg amputation so I am aware of what could happen. And he was not overweight.

Many find that as long as you are reducing carbohydrates then incorporating healthy fat actually can improve their cholesterol ratios.
A starting point of 55mmol/mol is not too bad and many do manage to reduce from there with diet only but the metformin if you can tolerate it will give a helping hand but diet is going to have the greatest impact.
Things like chocolate especially if 70% or more dark choc and reserved for a treat is OK.
Portion control is also important but by having plenty of protein and healthy fats there is no need to be hungry.
WW can be too high carbs for Type 2 diabetics unless you make some swaps for the high carb foods or have a very tailored program.

Good to hear you are wanting to refocus your diabetes management.

We have a friendly weight loss group where forum members encourage each other, share their strategies and experiences, and post updates on their progress.

Other members focus on blood glucose reductions, and some find that the menu they use to reduce post-meal rises in glucose levels has the benefit of helping them lose weight even if they aren’t deliberately counting/restricting calories.

While there are obvious things like cakes, biscuits, sweets and sugary drinks that you will want to cut out straight away, you might be surprised how much *all* carbohydrate affects your BG levels, including rice, pasta, potatoes, bread, pastry, grains, cereals and many fruits.

It’s not that you have to avoid those things entirely… but keeping portion-sizes in line with what your body can cope with can be hugely helpful.

There are a number of different meal plans, including low calorie, low carb, and mediterranean-style approaches here which might give you a few pointers
