Hello @DrMum, welcome to the forum - is there something you'd like clarification on? There is usually someone who can help.

hi Drummer, I'm hoping to find out where I'm going wrong as nothing I do seems to get my HbA1c down. Don't get much advice from the practice nurse at my annual check up, and as for the DESMOND course.... it didn't help at all

What is your HbA1C? Do you have a BG meter?

I am using a (free sample) Libre Freeview just now, it's reading 7.8 average (aka 62 in the other system) but I've only had it on for 5 days or so. My last HbA1c was in September and it was 47.

47 so you are in the pre-diabetic range then. An average reading of 7.8 is not too bad but the normal range is 4 to 7. What have you tried to try and lower your HbA1C?

Lily123 that's reassuring. I think I've tried everything apart from giving up being a vegetarian- couldn't believe my diagnosis and was determined to reverse it- but I haven't managed to! I have a low BMI, low carb diet, and I exercise. I even drink horrible green tea and cider vinegar. Sigh!

Being a vegetarian can be tricky with carbs. I’m also vegetarian. What makes of veggie foods do you like?

tonight we had fennel cooked in a tomato/paprika/ sauce with butter beans. It was reminiscent of Spanish food though without the chorizo, obvs!. I didn't make it.
Last night `I did a stir fry with tofu (no rice/noodles etc)
I'm starting to think the beans are the issue. What do you eat?

Im T1 so I have to count carbs to work out insulin and not limit carbs - well no more than someone without diabetes. I like stir fry,Quorn and the line of veggie stuff that Tescos sell- I think it’s called plant chef but not sure. What veggies do you have in your stir fry?

It depends what I have got in. Yesterday I shredded a Savoy cabbage really fine and added some frozen French beans. I put in loads of finely sliced ginger and garlic and a small onion.
How do you count the carbs?have you got a system you could share?

On the back of every packet of whatever food you buy there will be nutritional information written down and this will include carbs (written as carbohydrates on packaging) Make sure you take into account where it says per 100grams or per serving

Oh I see. I do a lot of cooking so I generally just buy ingredients and make my own. I'm going to have to get to work with some scales and a notebook!

There is a book you can buy called Carbs & Cals which has many different foods and there weights and carb values. There is also an app but it costs money to subscribe. I will find out how much the book is

The book is £27.87 on Amazon so it may be cheaper to get the app

thanks for checking Lily123. I'll explore this tomorrow. Off to bed now, feeling a bit reassured after going on this forum.

I believe the app is now available on subscription.

I cook a lot of my own things from scratch and use a spreadsheet which I have created by searching the web.

I tried Carbs and Cal's app but found it fiddly and contained very little of the veggie meals I ate
Unless it has improved significantly in that area over the last 5 years, I think it is a waste of money for veggies who cook from scratch.

Paperback is £13.99 with a pocket version at £9.99. I agree that it's very useful

You appear to have two threads on the go which can get confusing as we are asking questions about things you have mentioned on the other thread and may not be noticed when replies are given so it looks as if things you have said have been ignored so apologies.
