Hi Alaine!

There are different options for trying to lose weight, and members of the forum who have tried all of them.

Personally I have chosen low carb (under 130g per day), by mostly switching the carb-heavy foods that used to be in my diet for vegetables this has meant I'm eating lower calorie than I was too and not feeling hungry.

https://www.wchc.nhs.uk/content/uploads/2019/11/DiabetesSmart_dietary_approaches.pdf has an outline of different options

Hi. Im T2 since july.

I've managed to get the bulk of the weight I need to loose off by reducing carbs and junk food, notice for me I said reducing not cutting. I have cut some stuff but not much. I still enjoy the same food but portion control and quantity control. I still eat the same more or less but my plate now has a very different portion of each food.

I find a nice mix of walking everyday and the carb reduction has helped me to drop some of the weight and it's staying off. I've tried other diets in the past where I've lost weight and then it's back on in no time. Loosing weight and keeping it off for me has been more of a lifestyle change.

Hi Alaine, welcome to the forum.

Glad that you've joined us as it can be overwhelming when you've recently been diagnosed.

How did you come to be diagnosed and how are you getting on with things at the moment such as medication and managing food?

With type 2 diabetes, many people find that reducing carbs and increasing proteins and healthy fats helps with both blood sugar control and weight loss.

It can be a bit tricky to get the right balance to begin with so it may be worth keeping a diary of what you usually eat in a week then look at how you can reduce and or swap some of the carbs in your diet.

We've got some info on our main site that may be of use https://www.diabetes.org.uk/guide-to-diabetes/enjoy-food/eating-with-diabetes/i-have-type-2-diabetes

I'd advise getting your blood glucose under control rather than going for weightloss - it sorts out a lot of the reasons for gaining weight in the first place, but it really is important to assess the amount of carbs in your diet and make plans to reduce spikes and bring down levels by reducing or substituting foods.

Hi, I was diagnosed over the phone when I had a blood test done to check my cholesterol levels. Doctor got me an appointment with the diabetic nurse who advised me to lose weight and IV to go back in couple of months to get my bloods checked again. So feeling like I need to make a real push for cutting out all my treats I used to eat. Still getting my head round the diagnoses and feel low some days thinking about it. I don't know anybody that is going through the same thing which is why I joined diabetes UK.

Do you know how far in to the diabetic numbers you are on the scale. It's usually mentioned to you as a ac1 or hba1c measured in mmol.

Normal is 42 mmol and less.
42-48 is pre diabetic
48+ is diabetic.

When I found out I was in the low 80s. Others have been in 3 digits. Some members are in the 50s and can get away with making small changes to their lifestyle. Oh I also found out in the exact same way, a regular blood test to check my cholesterol and I come out with this..

Do you know where on the scale you are? It could help with suggestions on the type or amount of changes people suggest could help you.

No don't know but next time I'm a doctor's I'll ask, thank you
No worries. It's useful to know for yourself too so you have a goal if you're the type of person that sort of thing works for. You might also find out if you are registered on the NHS site/app with the correct coded gp summary. Where you get to see results and test info. Not many people are as standard and you usually need to ask and wait ages to get it done.

Good luck finding out but in the meantime - if you have any questions or concerns there's a lot of people and resources on this site and in the learning zone (menu orange section) that are super helpful.

I have just been diagnosed today with HbA1c at 53 its the kick up the bum I need to lose weight now also just been diagnosed with high blood pressure and on tablets. I have joined the forum to get advice too

Hi IV just joined and I'm type 2 just diagnosed, needing support on going forward...

Hi , I have only recently joined the forum and find the support and help amazing. What I did is cut out all of the good things in life ( cream cakes , ice buns , processed foods and control portion size.I only drink the UK alcohol recommended levels.
I have purchased a couple of bottles of pilsner beers that does use sugar in the brewing process.Could not find any data regarding carbs but I try to keep within 130 carbs per day.

I walk a few thousand steps daily

No don't know but next time I'm a doctor's I'll ask, thank you
I would suspect that if you haven't immediately been given medication that you are at the lower end of the diabetic zone so some changes to your diet should have a positive impact. This will be reducing carbohydrates in your diet but it does not mean NO carbs or that you can't have tasty meals. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
It is a low carbohydrate approach which has been successful in reducing blood glucose and losing weight.
Many find keeping to less than 130g total carbs per day is where they need to aim at but that can depend on just where you are in terms of HbA1C, the higher you are the more work you will need to do.
Exercise also helps and that can be walking briskly if you can.

I got fat by eating way too much, I got thin by not doing that.
