Hi Shell, welcome to the forum 🙂 Very sorry to hear about your son's diagnosis. It is highly unlikely that the diagnosis is incorrect I'm afraid, although it is quite natural to hope it is some big mistake. How did he come to be diagnosed, and what insulin treatment is he on (e.g. 2 injections, multiple injections etc.)?
I would suggest reading The essential guide for parents of newly diagnosed children, written by one of our very experienced parents, to give you an idea of what others in your situation go through.
There are lots of resources available to help you understand and cope with his diagnosis. I would recommend getting a copy of Type 1 Diabetes in Children and Adolescents by Ragnar Hanas - considered to be the 'bible' for children and young people on insulin regimes. I would also suggest that, in addition to sharing your experiences here, you join the Children with Diabetes website, where you will find hundreds of parents who will be able to help with any questions you may have. JDRF produce packa support and information which may help also.
How old is he, and how is he coping so far? Please ask any questions you may have, nothing is considered 'silly' and we will do our best to help 🙂

I can remember very similar feelings in those early months - disbelief, guilt, sadness...I think that is normal. It will get easier and you will adjust to how things have changed. How old is your son ?

I remember sitting with my son in a&e, just after diagnosis, and telling them that they MUST have gotten it WRONG. It was obviously a mistake. A year and a half later, I still wish it had been a mistake, but unfortunately not!
The shock takes a while to wear off, but I promise it will get better and it is not the end of the world that I once thought it was. Yes, it is crap, but you can manage it.

Hi Shell and welcome to the forum. My daughter was diagnosed age 11 last October and although I really knew before I took her to the doctor I still went on hoping I was going to be proved wrong (even after a Boots blood test kit purchased on holiday in Scotland indicated very high glucose level!). It is a shock, but it is beginning to become part of our lives now and slowly getting easier. You will get there!
