At risk of diabetes
I'm on a low carb diet as I'm pre diabetic. I'm so confused about what I should eat. Do I go low fat and low carb??? Thanks everyone x

I would go normal fat and low carb until you see what suits you, measuring your bg to find out how foods affect you is what it's all about as YMMV your mileage may vary.
 
Hi @Misslish as you are pre-diabetic you can probably return to normal levels with only slight modifications to your diet. Try cutting portion sizes rather than eliminating carbs. Do you exercise? If not adding even some gentle exercise to your life style will help lower your blood glucose and if you need to loose some weight then that will help your levels as well. Of course, if you lower portion size and exercise a bit more then weight loss will almost certainly follow - a virtuous circle.
 
You could well feel rather ill trying to do low fat - fat is an essential part of the diet, and unlike low carb, I have yet to find any actual evidence of a benefit from low fat - rather the reverse.

Were you given any numbers when you were told you were at risk of diabetes @Misslish ?

Usually you will have had an HbA1c check done and a reading above 42 and up to 47 puts you in the 'at risk' category, while a reading above 48mmol/mol is the usual cut-off for a diagnosis with diabetes.

The HbA1c is a measure of how much glucose has generally been in your blood stream over the life of your current set of red blood cells (about 120 days) so it's a rough average of the last 3 months or so, weighted to the more recent 4-6 weeks.

Knowing where you are at the starting point can help you determine how dramatically (or gently) you may want to tweak your diet aside from just cutting out the obvious sweet and sugary things 🙂
