Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi my name is Susan ive been type2 for two years now and on 3 metformin tabs a day , i am finding it very hard at the moment hence joining here to get any information that will help me. Ive been told by the nurse not to buy diabetic food as these are very expensive and are of no good to you, she said i could eat anything in moderation thats what i have been doing ofcourse i dont eat sweets, choc, cake and things full of sugar but i feel so ill with what i am eating,.. i dont check my levels as i dont want to be pricking my finger every meal time i just want to be normal lol if you know what i mean, plus ive not been given any information about this from the doc, i go for diabetic clinic every 6 months i have my eyes tested and my feet checked but i think i may be eating too many carbs thanks to looking at Johns diet that was brilliant information John thank you as i now know what i can eat i know every ones different but i must say ive had only 1 small slice of bread today i feel ok a bit hungry but ok so im going to start by cutting out the bread and see how i go on with that for now. Today i have had grilled bacon tomatoe and egg i small slice of bread ... lunch three crisp breads with sardines in oil 1 lowfat yogurt 1 black decafe coffee... snacks 1 small apple and water to drink. please tell me if im doing this wrong many thanks susan.

Hi Susan, welcome to the forum🙂 Your nurse was correct about 'diabetic' foods - they have sweeteners in them that can cause an upset stomach, and since they still contain carbohydrate they can also affect your blood sugar levels. I've found that the best approach is following a Low GI diet. Low GI foods convert to glucose more slowly than high GI foods so cause less of a 'spike' in levels. However, bear in mind that some foods affect people differently. For example, porridge is generally considered a good breakfast option, but some people find it causes a big increase in levels. The only way you can know what food is most suitable for you is by testing and trial and error, I'm afraid.
