Hi just diagnosed 2 weeks ago with type 2 have been on metformin 1 dose for 5 days now, will increase to 2 tablets after a week. No side effects until yesterday got terrible stomach pains followed by diarrhoea. woke up this morning with stomach ache again. Is this normal?

Hi negh,....

Welcome to the forum. It is the same sort of thing that happened to me, but it does pass - you just have to stick it out. If it hasnt settled down in a few more days it may be worth checking it out with your Doctor or Diabetic Support Nurse (if you have one)...

Good Luck, and ask all the questions you need - someone will always be able to help, even if its to tell you where else to go and ask, lol xxx

Hi negh21, welcome to the forum 🙂 Can't answer your question from personal experience as I've never taken metformin, but most people find that the discomfort and side effects dissipate after a couple of weeks or so. If you find that the problems are badly affecting your quality of life then do return to your GP and ask about alternatives - there is a 'slow-release' version of metformin called Glucophage SR which some people find easier to tolerate.

Meanwhile, please feel free to ask anything you are unsure about. We have members here with a very broad range of experience that can help you out with virtually anything - nothing is considered 'silly'! 🙂 Diabetes is a complex condition but it can be managed successfully with knowledge and care. Have a look at the links in this thread for some useful information to help you start making sense of everything:

The book by Gretchen Becker is highly recommended by many of our Type 2 members, so an excellent place to start. I look forward to hearing more from you 🙂

A warm welcome to the forum, Liz.

I was very lucky when diagnosed to get a place on an education course run by the NHS called Diabetes X-Pert. There are other types of course run too. It is worth checking with you GP or DSN whether there is anything suitable in your area.

I found it extremely useful as a starting point and it was good to meet other people in the same boat and be able to ask questions in a relaxed atmosphere.

But, of course, there's always us lot!! :D
